What's Next in the JCPS School of Innovation Competition?

For the four School of Innovation finalists, the next few months will focus on shaping their concepts into more concrete proposals.

For Jefferson County Public Schools, the work over the next 17 months or so includes helping those teams develop their plans, looking to the board to make a decision and decide on funding, and then working to get the school open in the 2015-16 academic year.

To the point: Opening a School of Innovation will mean an allocation of resources amid parallel reviews of facilities and magnet school programs.

Here Are The 12 Semi-Finalist Ideas In The JCPS Schools of Innovation Competition

Last year, Jefferson County Public Schools asked the community to submit their ideas of new school concepts. 

The initiative, called Schools of Innovation, is meant to foster new approaches to education. The school district's goal is to apply one of the 12 concepts to a school starting in the 2015-16 school year.

JCPS got 48 complete submissions and a review panel has narrowed them to 12 semifinalists.

Testing Waivers for Kentucky School Districts of Innovation Wins House Committee Approval

A bill that would modify student assessments in Kentucky public schools has unanimously cleared a House committee.

The measure would permit schools participating in the Kentucky Department of Education’s Districts of Innovation program to implement new testing methods to assess student performance.

Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Donna Hargens testified before the House Education Committee Tuesday morning, saying that alternative assessments won’t be any less rigorous than current ones.

JCPS' Schools of Innovation Semi-Finalists Are Being Released This Week

Louisville this week gets its first look at the semi-finalists for Jefferson County Public Schools' Schools of Innovation competition. 

Last year, JCPS asked the community to submit new, innovative concepts for schools—and 48 people or groups did. Its tied to the state's Districts of Innovation program, which frees districts of some regulations in an effort to drive new approaches to education.

JCPS Gets 48 'School of Innovation' Proposals At Deadline

The deadline to submit proposals for designing the next Jefferson County public school has passed, and officials say 48 individuals or groups are moving on for review.

Initially, more than 80 groups expressed interest in the School of Innovation Design Competition—which set out to change the look of public education. 

The final 48 submissions will be more than enough to determine a set of strong semi-finalists, says Jonathan Lowe, who helps lead the project for JCPS.

It’s a good mix of applicants, says Jonathan Lowe, who heads the district’s School of Innovation Design Competition.  The winner will receive help from JCPS to see their dream school become a reality.

JCPS Says 67 'School of Innovation' Commitment Letters Received

Jefferson County Public Schools has received 67 letters of intent to design the first ever School of Innovation.

When JCPS announced its School of Innovation Design Competition last month officials  told the public to think big.  They said any individual or group could submit an  idea, which will be due at the end of January.

The proposals can include suggestions on new ways to educate. City innovation director Ted Smith says the ideas should "make us gasp."
