JCPS Has Received 15 Commitment Letters From 'School of Innovation' Designers So Far

Officials say they’ve received 15 letters of intent so far from groups or individuals who want to design the next Jefferson County public school.

The district announced its School of Innovation Design Competition last month, which allows anyone to submit ideas that JCPS staff could potentially help become a reality.

JCPS Wants You To Design The First 'School of Innovation'

If you could design your own school, what would it look like?

That’s the question posed to Jefferson County residents by the school district, which will consider the best idea for creating the first “school of innovation” and help it become a reality as early as the 2015-2016 school year, officials said Tuesday.

“I would like to see classrooms get dumped in general,” says Fred Durham, co-founder of Café Press in Louisville.

JCPS Announcing Details Of 'School Of Innovation Design Competition' Tuesday

Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Donna Hargens will announce details of a competition to create a new JCPS school  Tuesday.

Earlier this year, JCPS was granted District of Innovation status by the Kentucky Board of Education.

It was one of only four school districts across the state to earn this label. These districts are allowed to waive certain education department regulations that other schools must follow.

Districts of Innovation: What Waivers JCPS Received And Why

Over the summer, Jefferson County Public Schools will prepare to become a District of Innovation and will work with the Kentucky Department of Education to determine how it will measure the success of its new initiatives to improve student outcomes.

In all, six waivers were approved for JCPS and two were denied, but some other parts of the district’s plan may still need to be worked out. (At the bottom of this story, you'll find the  eight waivers JCPS requested and whether they were approved.)

Jefferson County Public Schools Will Be A 'District Of Innovation'

Jefferson County Public Schools is among the four school districts that were recommended and approved to become Kentucky’s first "Districts of Innovation."

Under state law, school districts can apply for exemption from certain Kentucky Department of Education regulations. These districts are called Districts of Innovation.

Sixteen school districts applied this year, but only four were recommended by the Kentucky Department of Education and then approved by the Kentucky Board of Education Wednesday.
