School Board Approves New JCPS Code of Conduct With Focus on Reducing Suspensions

The Jefferson County Board of Education approved revisions to the districtwide Student Code of Conduct  on Tuesday night.  The changes focus on reducing suspension rates while ensuring student safety, said Jackie Wisman, the district’s director of Safe and Drug Free Schools. 

The board approved the revisions on a 5-2 vote.  Board members Debbie Wesslund and Linda Duncan voted against the changes.

Wesslund said the changes were made “too fast” and the focus needs to be on faculty and staff training, plus observation.

JCPS Superintendent Evaluation Process Begins

The process of evaluating the performance of Jefferson County Public Schools superintendent Donna Hargens begins at Tuesday evening's school board meeting.

The evaluation process is a mandatory, said Brad Hughes, spokesman for the Kentucky School Board Association. 

He also said it is an important process.

“It’s probably next to setting tax rates and the budget as one of the most important decisions a school board has to make over the course of a year,” he said.

June 6 Will Be The Last Day of School for JCPS This Year

  The last day of school for students in Jefferson County Public Schools will be June 6, rather than June 12, following a vote Monday night by the JCPS Board.

Teachers will work through June 13. Graduation dates for JCPS seniors will be June 6-9.

Testing Waivers for Kentucky School Districts of Innovation Wins House Committee Approval

A bill that would modify student assessments in Kentucky public schools has unanimously cleared a House committee.

The measure would permit schools participating in the Kentucky Department of Education’s Districts of Innovation program to implement new testing methods to assess student performance.

Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Donna Hargens testified before the House Education Committee Tuesday morning, saying that alternative assessments won’t be any less rigorous than current ones.
