In Its Second Year, the JCPS Elementary School Assignment System Got More Kindergarten Applications

Jefferson County Public Schools had a slight increase in kindergarten applications before its "initial" school choice deadline, but overall elementary school applications declined, according to data provided by the school district.

JCPS administrators took steps to increase the number of applications before that "initial" January deadline, because those applications are given first priority in student assignment.

This year, 4,970 applications were sent for the kindergartners of the 2014-15 school year. For the 2013-14 class of kindergartners, 4,860 applications were sent.

Elementary school assignments are guided by several factors, including the district's diversity standards and the will of each set of parents. Parents can begin expressing their will on Monday, when the application process for the kindergartners of the 2014-15 school year begins.

A school bus pulls into the Meyzeek Middle School parking lot Thursday afternoon. Instead of carrying students, inside are computers and printers and Internet.

Jefferson County Public Schools' mobile bus program helps the district reach parents who haven’t registered or enrolled their child—and who may never even apply for elementary schools when the application period opens on Monday. 

Last year, JCPS had roughly 2,000 new kindergarten students whose parents didn't apply during the application period—out of about 7,500 new students.
