Kentucky Won't Appeal Ruling Halting Executions

Kentucky will not appeal a judge's ruling keeping a ban on executions in place with state officials opting instead to fight out a lawsuit brought by inmates challenging the way lethal injections are carried out.

Justice Cabinet spokeswoman Jennifer Brislin also told The Associated Press that there won't be an attempt to rewrite the regulations for executions to deal with concerns raised by Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd.

Kentucky Will Change Lethal Injection Procedures

A judge has ordered the state of Kentucky to rethink the way it executes prisoners. 

Franklin Circuit Judge Phillip Shepherd previously ruled the lethal injection process that involves three drugs could no longer be allowed. The state appealed and lost.

The Kentucky Justice Cabinet filed notice Thursday that it will propose new regulations by July 24. The single-page motion does not say what changes will be made, but the move could open the door to a switch to a single-drug execution.
