Heavy Rains, Floods Cause Travel Problems, Affect School Schedules

Heavy rains overnight have caused flooding and scattered road closures, many of them in southern Indiana, where officials have been clearing several mudslides.

New Albany-Floyd County Schools are operating on a two-hour delay today and West Clark Community Schools are closed.

Motorists are urged to use caution and not drive into standing water.

Flash flood warnings and watches remain in effect this morning for parts of the region

Rain is expected to clear out of the Louisville area later today, followed by cooler temperatures.

West Virginia State Senator Says Mining-Related Accident Shows Need for More Mining

The House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a hearing today on coal mining and the Environmental Protection Agency’s veto of the Spruce Mine in West Virginia. I didn’t cover the hearing, but Ken Ward of the Charleston (WV) Gazette did. He pointed out some peculiar testimony from West Virginia State Senator Art Kirkendoll.

Roads Closed Due to Trees, Flooding Across Louisville

Morning rain and flooding have closed streets across Louisville.

According to MetroSafe spokeswoman Jody Johnson, a water main break near the University of Louisville has exacerbated the flood conditions. The break is at Cardinal Boulevard, east of Floyd Street, and Johnson says workers from the Louisville Water Company are on site.

Flash Flood Warning Declared for Jefferson County, Southern Indiana

Some road updates from our Facebook fans.

UPDATE 11:07am: The National Weather Service has revised its flash flood warning; it’s only in effect until 11:30am.

UPDATE 10:22am: Flooding at the University of Louisville prompted the cancellation of classes until 11:00am. Officials say they’ll decide soon about classes for the rest of the day.
