The old adage goes, "That's why they play the game."

In Wednesday night's Sugar Bowl, the Louisville Cardinals played a Florida Gators team that most sports analyst agreed was too talented and too fast for this game to be competitive.

The Louisville Cardinals pounced early and often to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the 15-year history of the Bowl Championship Series.

The Cardinals defeated the heavily favored Florida Gators 33-23 on Wednesday night in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. 

Louisville scored a touchdown off a Florida interception in the first seconds of the game and never looked back, taking a two touchdown lead into halftime. The Cardinals had a 23-point lead about halfway through the fourth quarter, but the Gators managed a touchdown on a kickoff return. 

The running theme among sportswriters for Wednesday night's Sugar Bowl goes something like this: The Florida Gators are more talented than Louisville at every position but the position that counts most — quarterback.

Sports Illustrated's Andy Staples makes this a rather direct point, noting:

After a month of preparation, the University of Louisville football team is in New Orleans to take on Florida in the Sugar Bowl Wednesday night.

Cards coach Charlie Strong says his players are well aware of their underdog status against the 11-1 Gators, whom some are picking to win by two touchdowns or more.
