Kentuckians Urged to Get Flu Vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control is focusing on flu prevention this week as part of National Influenza Vaccination Week.

Complications with the flu result in nearly 23,000 deaths annually, according to reports from the CDC.

Louisville health officials said the best way to avoid the virus is prevention and a flu shot is the best method of prevention.

Dr. Ron Waldrige, physician executive with KentuckyOne Health, said the vaccine is recommended for everybody from “birth to 100 years old.”

“We encourage everyone to get flu vaccines,” he said.

Flu Shot Appointments Now Available in Louisville

Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is now offering flu shots at several locations throughout the city.

Health officials are recommending that everyone older than six months be immunized in preparation for the upcoming flu season, which is expected to last from mid-October through the end of February.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports there will be adequate supplies. But Dave Langdon, Metro Department of Health and Wellness spokesperson, encourages people to avoid the dangerous risk of flu and get their shots as soon as possible.

Indiana officials are encouraging Hoosiers to be vaccinated against the influenza virus — and the state's new governor on Thursday heeded the call.

The 2012/13 flu season has been severe across the nation, with a higher number of hospitalizations and deaths than in recent years. Flu season typically lasts from October through May, so it's not too late to become vaccinated.
