Why and How We Might Eat Local for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving day will send cooks to kitchens and eaters to table across Louisville and the rest of the U.S. For Richard McCarthy, it's a good reason to not just eat the food, but to think about where each ingredient and dish comes from and what it means to us personally.

McCarthy is the executive director of Slow Food USA, a national network  that supports, in their words, "good, clean and fair food for all." He was recently in Louisville and stopped by the WFPL studio. We talked about why and how Thanksgiving cooks can use local foods in their dishes.

Greg Fischer's Thanksgiving: Family, Community Service and Bourbon-Infused Turkey

When Thanksgiving rolls around, Mayor Greg Fischer spends part of his day at his grill with the turkey.

It's his specialty, he said, a "rotisserized turkey with a orange juice, bourbon baste underneath of the turkey.

"As the fumes waft into the turkey," he added, "infusing it with a slight Kentucky bourbon taste, it could possibly be the world's best turkey."

Gabe Eggs on Louisville's Urban Chicken Keepers

Five years ago, urban chickens were something for explorers, pioneers, homesteaders (hippies). Backyard chickens were a novelty. Because even if they were a major household food source, they weren't exactly necessary. The idea of having a personal stake in your private food chain was admirable, but seemed a bit hard.

Today chickens are a fairly average home accessory. So let us now praise famous hens, and the eggs that begat them (and they beget).
