Officials Halt Indiana Plant Project Over Pakistan Connection

Indiana officials have suspended their support for a proposed fertilizer plant while they investigate a Pakistani company involved in the project.

The Indiana Finance Authority issued $1.3 billion in bonds in December for a nitrogen fertilizer plant Midwest Fertilizer Corp. plans to build at the Port of Mount Vernon in southwestern Indiana's Posey County. Midwest Fertilizer Corp. is part of the Pakistan-based Fatima  Group.

Lawmaker Withdraws Indiana Tort Bill Pushed by Pence

A tort reform measure from Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's first-year agenda has gone down in defeat amid opposition in a key Senate committee.

Republican Sen. Mike Delph said today he was withdrawing the proposal that would make the losers of lawsuits pay all legal fees because it was unlikely to pass the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The measure sparked controversy when it was first submitted earlier this month. Pence didn't include the proposal in his campaign "roadmap" and has declined to comment on it in multiple interviews.

Pence to Address Indiana Lawmakers This Week

Indiana’s new governor will deliver his State of the State address to lawmakers this week.

Governor Mike Pence is expected to reiterate his call for a ten-percent cut in the state income tax and urge lawmakers to approve other elements of his budget proposal, which includes a one-percent increase in education spending and modest hikes for other programs.

Pence Budget Proposal Presented To Lawmakers

Gov. Mike Pence is asking lawmakers to spend most of Indiana's cash surplus on a 10 percent cut in the personal income tax.

Pence Budget Director Chris Atkins submitted a two-year spending plan Tuesday with a modest increase for the embattled Department of Child Services and 1 percent more spending for education.

But the new Republican governor limits spending growth in his roughly $29 billion budget to cover the $790 million cost of the tax cut.

Pence Signs 15 Executive Orders During First Day In Office

New Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is telling several state agencies they must consider the effect any new regulations would have on families.

That was among 15 executive orders that Pence signed in the governor's office a few hours after his inauguration.

Pence proposed the family impact statements during his campaign. He says he wants to ensure that "intact married families" aren't hurt by state rules. He says the reviews aren't meant to disadvantage single-parent or other families.
