Kentucky Bill Would Extend Graduation Time For Refugee Students, Education Department Has Concerns


Thang Lian is a resettled Burmese refugee student who attends Jefferson County Public Schools’ Newcomer Academy. In March, he turns 21, which means the district can no longer financially support his education.

So he’ll have to choose another path.

“My parents and my counselor were talking about next year I move to GED,” he says.

For some the GED high school equivalency diploma is an option; others may enroll in Jefferson County's online alternative program.

Greater Clark Schools Seniors Need Fewer Credits To Graduate


High school students in Greater Clark County Schools now need fewer credits to graduate following a school board decision this week. Officials say the decision will keep the district competitive with its neighbors.

Previously, Greater Clark high school seniors needed 46 credits to graduate. Now they need 40, which is the state minimum.

GCCS board president Mark Pavey says this could help a few dozen more students who couldn’t otherwise graduate in Greater Clark schools.

IU Unveils Tuition Break For "On Time" Grads

Indiana University students who graduate within four years could pay less tuition than those who take longer under a plan unveiled this week by President Michael McRobbie.

The on-time completion award program will freeze tuition for students after their sophomore year if they are on track to graduate in four years.

The program takes effect next fall. It will provide eligible students financial awards equal to any increase in tuition and fees that they would otherwise incur during their final two years at IU.
