Beshear Cuts Kentucky Budget to Balance $90.9-Million Shortfall

Gov. Steve Beshear issued a pair of executive orders this week reducing state spending levels to plug a $90.9-million hole in Kentucky's budget.

The Office of the State Budget Director announced the shortfall last week, which is due largely to an unexpected $63-million decline in income related to capital gains

Beshear's cuts cover the $90.9-million gap.

U.S. House Majority Leader-Elect to Attend Fundraiser for Kentucky House GOP

The newly elected majority leader of the U.S. House of Representatives will visit Kentucky next month to help raise campaign cash for state House Republicans, who hope to takeover the lower chamber this year.

Congressman Kevin McCarthy of California won the leadership position last week to replace Virginia Congressman Erica Cantor, who lost his primary election in a stunning upset.

House Committee Passes Redistricting Maps After Long Wait

The House State Government committee has advanced a new redistricting map to the House floor after weeks of closed door debate.

Last year's state House and Senate districts were ruled unconstitutional by the Kentucky Supreme Court after House GOP members challenged them in court. The new House districts would create seven new districts all across Kentucky, where no current lawmakers reside.

Sannie Overly First Woman Elected to Kentucky House Leadership

State Rep. Sannie Overly will be the first woman in history elected to a leadership position in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

Overly, of Paris, on Tuesday was elected House Democratic Caucus Chair in private leadership elections today. Overly beat state Rep. Bob Damron, of Nicholasville, for the position; all other House Democratic leaders retained their posts.

Fancy Farm Speeches Focus on Missing Democrats

The absence of many Democrats gave Republicans plenty of fodder at this year's Fancy Farm Picnic.

Republicans from U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell down to local legislative candidates took shots at state Democrats and President Barack Obama throughout the event.

“And so I think we ought to take a quick attendance check here as we get started. Governor Beshear are you here," McConnell said, with Republicans in the audience responding with a loud “No.”

Republican Leader Calls On Beshear to Opt Out of Medicaid Expansion

The highest-ranking Republican in the Kentucky state House is calling on Governor Steve Beshear to reject an expansion of Medicaid set forth in the Affordable Care Act.

The Supreme Court ruling on the healthcare law allows states to opt out of the expansion of the program. House Minority Floor Leader Jeff Hoover wants Beshear to follow other states that have opted out.

Hoover says expanding the program in Kentucky would put an even bigger burden on the state budget, even with managed care operators running the system.
