Consumer Advocates Worry New Medicaid Operators in Louisville Region Will Cause Problems

The Louisville Medicaid region will now be home to four different managed care operators. State officials announced the change today.

Joining Passport Health Plan is Humana, CoventryCares and WellCare.

WellCare and Coventry already have statewide contracts for Medicaid and Passport has operated in Louisville for years.

Passport officials say they will still try to continue maintain their high level of care, despite no longer holding an exclusive contract for the region.

Humana, Passport Join Two Others as New Louisville Medicaid Operators

After decades of having one company oversee Medicaid, the Louisville area will now have four private Medicaid providers.

The Louisville area was the first part of the state to have Medicaid privatized, and Passport Health Plan has administered the program ever since.

But the rest of the state has since been privatized, and multiple operators compete for patients across the commonwealth.

The Cabinet for Health and Family Services announced today that Passport will now have competition from CoventryCares, WellCare and Humana.

Next Step for Kentucky's Health Insurance Exchange: Picking a Model Plan

The confusing process of setting up Kentucky’s health insurance exchange should get clearer later this month.

The Affordable Care Act requires states to set up exchanges in which residents can compare and purchase health plans. Governor Steve Beshear choose to set up the state exchange earlier this year, rather than let the federal government operate the system.

So far, Beshear has created a new state office to house the exchange and he's named an executive director. 

And by the end of this month, the state must choose an existing health plan that will be the benchmark for the exchange. To be listed on the exchange, all other health plans will have to provide similar or better service than the benchmark.

Work Begins On Third Phase of Parklands Project

Construction has begun on another phase of the Parklands of Floyds Fork, the nearly 4,000 acre park system under development in eastern and southeastern Louisville.

Ground was broken today on a section that will include a half-mile, tree-lined walk called the Humana Grand Allee .   It’s being funded with an $8 million donation from Humana and its employees.

The Parklands’ Scott Martin says this is the third of the project’s four major phases along the Floyds Fork watershed.

U.S. Attorneys Investigate Humana's Southern Florida Healthcare Providers

 

The U.S. Attorney's Office is investigating some of Humana’s southern Florida affiliates and providers for possible violations of Medicare regulations.

In Humana’s annual report, it says since January, U.S. attorneys have requested information from Humana and some southern Florida affiliates for alleged violations to the coding of medical claims and loans to physicians.

In the report, Humana says it currently has its own ongoing investigation in Florida and has willingly updated the U.S. Department of Justice and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
