Indiana Lawmakers Hold Organizational Session, Brace for Gay Marriage Battle

Indiana lawmakers convened today for an organizational session in advance of the 2014 General Assembly, which is gearing up for a political fight over gay marriage.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma says there are many pressing matters to consider during the short 30-day session, such as Indiana’s high unemployment rate, unmet education needs and road improvements.

But Bosma says the GOP-led legislature will also decide whether to move forward with a proposal to write a same-sex marriage ban into the state constitution.

Court Upholds Fines Against Indiana House Democrats Over Labor Bill Protest

The Indiana Supreme Court has upheld fines levied by state House Republicans on Democrats for their legislative walkouts over a labor bill.

In 2011, Indiana House Democrats fled to Illinois to protest a right-to-work bill that also brought union demonstrators into the House gallery, and staged another, shorter walkout in 2012, the year the bill was passed. 

House Speaker Brian Bosma levied thousands of dollars in fines against the Democrats for their absence.

Indiana Lawmakers Could Wrap Up Session This Week

The 2013 Indiana General Assembly is winding down, with legislative leaders saying they may be able to wrap up business early.

The Indiana General Assembly faces an April 29 deadline to wrap up its business, including adoption of a new, two-year state budget.

Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma said last week that he thought the legislature might be able to finish its work by the end of this week.     If that happens, lawmakers would not have to return to the Statehouse for a final day on Monday, April 29.
