Investigation Continues 1 Year After Murder of Bardstown Police Officer Jason Ellis

Sunday will mark the one-year anniversary of the murder of Bardstown Police officer Jason Ellis—a case that remains unsolved.

In the early morning of May 25, 2013, Ellis’ body was found outside his police cruiser on a highway exit ramp in Nelson County.  He was in uniform and on his way home after finishing his shift.

Ellis was a K-9 officer with the police department.

Kentucky Lawmaker Proposes Changing Highway Name for Slain Bardstown Officer Jason Ellis

A Kentucky lawmaker wants to rename a stretch of highway in Nelson County to honor Jason Ellis, the Bardstown Police officer ambushed and murdered on duty in May.

A 13 mile stretch of the Bluegrass Parkway from 31-E to Highway 55, would be renamed the "Jason Ellis Memorial Highway," said State Rep. David Floyd, a Bardstown Republican. Floyd said it won't make up for the community's loss, but it's a fitting tribute.

He introduced the legislation after a number of requests from his constituents.

Slain Bardstown Police Officer Laid to Rest

BARDSTOWN — Hundreds of people lined the streets of Bardstown and packed into a church for the emotional funeral of a police officer fatally shot on a highway exit ramp.

The coffin of 33-year-old Jason Ellis was draped in an American flag Thursday for the 1 ½-hour service. At least a half-dozen speakers took to the podium at Parkway Baptist Church.

The crowd included Ellis' wife and two young sons as well as police officers from across Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

Kentucky State Police: Slain Bardstown Police Officer Was Ambushed

Kentucky State Police say the fatal roadside shooting of a Bardstown Police officer was premeditated and are asking for the public's help in finding suspects.

Authorities say 33-year-old Officer Jason Ellis was shot multiple times with a shotgun after he got out of his cruiser to pick up debris on Exit 34 of the Bluegrass Parkway in Nelson County. Ellis was in uniform and was driving home.

Bardstown Police Officer Fatally Shot

A Bardstown Police officer was found shot to death this morning outside his cruiser on a Bluegrass Parkway exit ramp.

The Kentucky Standard reports that 33 year old Officer Jason Scott Ellis was on his way home from work when he was shot on Exit Ramp 34, sometime before 3:00am. He was in uniform and his emergency lights were flashing.

Bardstown Police Chief Rick McCubbin says there had been no radio contact from Ellis prior to the shooting.
