Jefferson County Public Schools Takes Step Toward Building New Elementary School in Norton Commons

Jefferson County Board of Education to Consider Step Toward New School in Norton Commons

Jefferson County Public Schools is considering a formal step toward building a new elementary school.

The board of education on Monday night will vote on an application to the state education department for a new school building in northeastern Jefferson County.

The move to build a new elementary school stems from a recent review of JCPS current and future facilities needs, said district spokesman Ben Jackey. The review of demographic data showed a need for a new elementary school in northeastern Jefferson County.

Jefferson County Board of Education OKs Plan to Provide Free Meals to All Students in 95 Schools

The Jefferson County Board of Education approved on Tuesday night  a program that will provide free breakfast and lunch to 55,000 students in 95 schools each day of class, regardless of the students' individual family income.

The program allows schools with a large percentage of students who qualify for free meals to provide free breakfast and lunches for the entire student body. Until now, a student was eligible for free meals only if their family met federal guidelines—for example, $23,850 or less per year for a family of four.

JCPS Superintendent Evaluation Process Begins

The process of evaluating the performance of Jefferson County Public Schools superintendent Donna Hargens begins at Tuesday evening's school board meeting.

The evaluation process is a mandatory, said Brad Hughes, spokesman for the Kentucky School Board Association. 

He also said it is an important process.

“It’s probably next to setting tax rates and the budget as one of the most important decisions a school board has to make over the course of a year,” he said.

55,000 JCPS Students May Get Free Meals Under New Plan; Others Could See 10-Cent Hike

The Jefferson County Board of Education on Tuesday will consider changing school  meal prices for students across the district.

Under one proposal, 55,000 students would begin getting free school breakfasts and lunches,  said Julia Bauscher, director of school and community nutrition services for JCPS. Meanwhile, the school system intends to raise by 10 cents the price of lunches for students not eligible for free or reduced meals.

Tonight, the Jefferson County School Board Will Consider 'Repurposing' Myers Middle School

The Jefferson County Board of Education tonight will consider a proposal that would "repurpose" the struggling Myers Middle School.

Starting next year, the Myers building would cease to be a middle school.

Under a plan to be presented to the board, sixth-graders assigned to Myers would instead be disperse to 11 JCPS middle schools: Carrithers, Westport, Highland, Thomas Jefferson, Newburg, Ramsey, Shawnee, Western, Noe, Highland and Meyzeek.

Debbie Wesslund Won't Run Again for Jefferson County Board of Education

Jefferson County Board of Education member Debbie Wesslund won’t seek re-election this year.

Wesslund has for eight years represented the board's third district, which covers northeastern Jefferson County. 

She says the decision to not run for another term involved a lot of thought. But she adds that she's relieved to make the announcement.

State Audit Recommends Removal of Myers Middle School Principal

Findings from a Kentucky Department of Education audit of Louisville’s Myers Middle School may lead to the removal of the school’s principal.

The recommendation to remove Jack Baldwin from his duties at the academically struggling school came on the heels of a Jefferson County Board of Education decision to implement a restaffing model at Myers in hopes of improving performance scores.
