Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson Resigns For White House Post; Crit Luallen to Replace Him

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson will resign on Nov. 13 for a post in the White House, and former state Auditor Crit Luallen will be appointed in his place, Gov. Steve Beshear announced Thursday.

Abramson will be President Obama's liaison to state and local government, the Associated Press reports.

Jerry Abramson has announced that he won't run for Kentucky governor in 2015, but he says he isn't necessarily done with electoral politics.

“You never know what kind of situation might change, what kind of situations might be different in the future than they are today," says Abramson, the lieutenant governor and former Louisville mayor.

"You never say never.”

Abramson didn't identify any particular office he's eyeing.

Louisvillians Haven't Had Much Luck Running for Kentucky Governor

Former Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson announced Tuesday that he won't run for governor in 2015. Instead, he wants to focus on education issues.

Abramson, Kentucky's lieutenant governor since 2011, very well could've ended up succeeding Gov. Steve Beshear, his longtime ally, political observers say.

But he would've have to overcome an obstacle: His Louisville roots.

A Louisvillian hasn't been elected Kentucky's governor since 1951—and even that has a caveat.

Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson won't run for governor in 2015.

Abramson, 66, announced the decision Tuesday in Elizabethtown. Earlier this summer, he told Kentucky Public Radio that he was considering a run and may decide around Fancy Farm, which was this past Saturday.

Jerry Abramson May Decide Around Fancy Farm Whether He'll Run for Governor

Kentucky Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson says he may announce his intentions regarding a run for governor before or shortly after the Fancy Farm Picnic on Aug. 3.

“I’m going through this yes, no, up down," Abramson said. “If you’re going to spend a year and a half hour to raise $15 million and once you win the question becomes can you really be a transformational public servant and make a significant difference in the future of Kentucky? That’s what I’m thinking through.”

He says polling shows he could win a race for governor, but he’s undecided on seeking the office.

Abramson: Tax Reform Commission Needs More Time

The Kentucky Commission on Tax Reform is planning to ask for an extension.

That's according to commission chair and Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson, who says there are too many options for reforming the state tax code to fully consider by the November 15th deadline.

“I think at our next meeting unless we solve the whole thing in five hours I’ll probably ask the group to give me the authority to request of the governor an extension of time and I feel very confident we’ll be able to get that,” says Abramson, adding that the final report could be complete by mid-December.
