Jewish Film Festival Showcases International Perspectives

The annual Jewish Film Festival opens in Louisville this week.Programmed by Jewish Community of Louisville and screened at various locations, including Village 8 Cinema, the annual Jewish Film Festival is has become a predominantly  foreign-language film festival, too.

This year’s films hail from Israel, Poland, the Netherlands and France, with one documentary hailing from the United States.

Musical Brings Songs to Life After Near-Death Experience

CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center opens a musical about creativity, legacy and brain surgery this week. "A New Brain," by the Tony Award-winning creative team behind "Falsettos," chronicles the creative struggles of a composer diagnosed with a terminal brain disorder.

“It is an obscure musical," says artistic director John Leffert, who also directs. "I think the subject matter scares people away.”

JCC Exhibit Pairs Local Artists Across Generational Lines

A new exhibit is open at the Jewish Community Center Patio Gallery featuring an art exchange between established and emerging local artists. The show is called Pairallels – emphasis on the pair.

Curator Stacey Reason asked members of the Artists' Breakfast Group, a group of Louisville artists who have been working together for nearly twenty years,  to begin a piece of art that focuses on global and local perspectives. Members of the Louisville Artists Syndicate, a group of younger visual artists, did the same. The exhibit includes sculpture, collage, paintings and mixed media work.

Big Dreams, Big Show: 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' at CenterStage

Louisville’s Center Stage opens Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” this week. The musical was the first Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice collaboration to be staged, but it didn’t really catch on until the two had a smash hit with “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the early Seventies.

The musical tells the Old Testament story of Jacob's favored son Joseph and his twelve jealous brothers. Joseph's a big dreamer -- and his dreams tend to come true -- so when he dreams that he will one day become king, his resentful brothers conspire to sell him into slavery.
