Kennedy's 'Vital and Useful' Life Inspired Naming of Louisville Bridge in His Honor

The world will mark the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination Friday. 

Here in Louisville, just days before the tragedy, state and local leaders were preparing to dedicate a new, but still unnamed bridge connecting Louisville and southern Indiana.    

Doug Proffitt and his colleagues at WHAS Television have spent about a month searching the station’s film archive for a report on the convergence of events that led to the naming of the John F. Kennedy Bridge.

Construction of Downtown Louisville Bridge to Begin July 1

Construction is scheduled to begin July 1 new downtown Louisville bridge running parallel to the Kennedy, The Ohio River Bridges Project announced.

The bridge is expected to open in three years.

More Interstate Repairs On Tap For Louisville Area

Some major interstate highway repairs will continue in the Louisville area over the next several months.

Much of the current work is on Interstate-71 between downtown Louisville and the Watterson Expressway. It was shut down for paving last weekend and lane reductions this month may cause sometimes lengthy delays.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokeswoman Andrea Clifford says repairs will also require another weekend shutdown of a portion of the interstate next month.
