Dutrow Racing Ban Upheld by New York Court

New York's top court has refused to hear another appeal by a Kentucky Derby-winning trainer on his 10-year ban from the sport for equine drug violations in that state.

The Court of Appeals, without comment , is denying Rick Dutrow Jr.'s request that the judges consider another appeal of the 2011 decision by the Racing and Wagering Board. The action appears to be the end of the appeals process for Dutrow.

Horse Trainer Dutrow Appealing New York Racing Ban

Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Rick Dutrow, Jr. is asking New York's top court to overturn his 10-year ban by the state Racing and Wagering Board for equine drug violations, saying it raises substantial civil rights issues.

In asking the Court of Appeals to hear Dutrow's case, attorney Michael Koenig says it should decide whether the appearance of bias by racing board Chairman John Sabini cost the trainer his right to a fair proceeding.

Churchill Downs Offers Top-Notch Guests New Venue

The library room located in the Mansion.

Churchill Downs officials have announced its $9 million renovation project to create "The Mansion" and will soon offer its preferred guests a chance to enjoy races in luxury.

This is how significant the new space will be: The Mansion is pushing the Gold Room--which serves certain VIPs--down to floor two. But, given the Gold Room is expanding as well it’s not such a bad thing.

I'll Have Another Headed to Japan to Stud

Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner I'll Have Another has been sold to a horse farm on the island of Hokkaido. The horse is currently at Betfair Hollywood Park and will embark on a stud career in August.

Artist LeRoy Neiman Dies; Subjects Included Ali, Derby

Artist LeRoy Neiman has died at age 91 in New York.

Neiman was best known for evoking the kinetic energy of the world's biggest sporting and leisure events with bright quick strokes. He was a contributing artist at Playboy magazine for many years and was the official painter of five Olympiads.

Churchill Downs Changes Qualifications for Kentucky Derby

Churchill Downs Inc is adopting a new system for horses wanted a spot at the Kentucky Derby.

In an attempt to gain fans, Churchill Downs Incorporated is adopting a new points system for entry into the Kentucky Derby and will cut the number of qualifying stakes races considered for entry from 185 down to 36.

"Our primary driving motive is to create new fans for horse racing," said CDI chair and CEO Bob Evans in a press release.

I'll Have Another Wins Preakness

Kentucky Derby winner I’ll Have Another has captured the second jewel of racing’s Triple Crown, overtaking Bodemeister at the finish line to win the 137thPreakness Stakes.

I’ll Have Another now has a chance to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.  The final leg of the series is the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.

As he did in the Derby,  I’ll Have Another came on strong in the stretch to edge out Bodemeister, who led for most of both races.   

The third-place Preakness finisher was Creative Cause.

Six Derby Horses in Preakness Stakes Field

A field of eleven is entered for tomorrow’s Preakness Stakes, the second jewel in thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. 

Kentucky Derby runner-up Bodemeister was made the morning line favorite this week. He’ll run from post position seven.

Derby winner I’ll Have Another was the early second choice. He’ll break from
post position nine. A Preakness win would set up an opportunity for him to become racing’s first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

Suspects Sought in Churchill Downs Homicide

Louisville Metro Police say they have no suspects in their investigation into a Derby weekend homicide on the Churchill Downs backside. 

The body of 48 year old Adan Fabian Perez was discovered early yesterday morning in a barn. Officials say he lived and worked on the backside as a groom.

LMPD homicide detective Lt. Barry Wilkerson says there are indications that Perez was involved in an altercation, but an autopsy today will determine the exact cause of death.

Churchill Downs Homicide Victim Identified

Louisville Metro Police continue their investigation into the death of a man whose body was found early today in a barn on the Churchill Downs backside.

He’s been identified as 48 year old Adan Fabian Perez of Guatemala, who lived on the backside. A state racing officials tells the Courier-Journal that Perez was a groom at the track.

The death has been ruled a homicide. Police say Perez was apparently involved in an altercation, but an exact cause of death has not been determined. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow.
