Beshear Meets With U.S. Energy Secretary Moniz on Future of Paducah Plant

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says his meeting with the new U-S Department of Energy Secretary was a “productive exchange.”

Beshear met with Secretary Ernest Moniz today regarding the uncertain future of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant and its 1,100 workers.

The United States Enrichment Corporation is in the shutdown process at the DOE owned plant after failing negotiate a new federal contract.

Beshear Encourages Moment of Silence Friday for Newtown Shooting Victims

Governor Steve Beshear is encouraging fellow Kentuckians to observe a moment of silence on Friday morning to honor the victims of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last week.

The governor of Connecticut called for the observance earlier this week and asked that all other states join in the remembrance.

Kentucky Lawmakers Optimistic Gambling Bill Will Pass

After years of defeat, Kentucky lawmakers believe an expanded gambling bill could become law next year. 

At the Kentucky Chamber’s annual policy day, House Speaker Greg Stumbo and new Senate Majority Floor Leader Damon Thayer discussed the prospects of such a bill in the upcoming session. Both leaders suggested the opposing chamber take up the bill first when they get to Frankfort next month.

On Expanded Gambling, Beshear Open to Cleaner Amendment

Gov. Steve Beshear is considering multiple options in the efforts to get the General Assembly to support expanded gambling legislation.

A constitutional amendment failed earlier this year in the state Senate -- and a major complaint from critics was that the amendment did too much to protect thoroughbred racing tracks over other businesses. The bill banned casinos from being within 60 miles of a race track, unless the casino was at the track.

Beshear Names Larry Bond as New Chief of Staff

Governor Steve Beshear has promoted his deputy chief of staff to the top spot.

Louisville native Larry Bond was named chief of staff today. He replaces Mike Haydon, who died unexpectedly earlier this month.

Bond was named to the deputy spot two years ago, after spending years in various roles in state government. He also worked in Louisville city government for years, including time as the city’s chief administrative officer.

Capitol Memorial To Be Held Wednesday For Mike Haydon

State officials are remembering Mike Haydon, Governor Steve Beshear's chief of staff, who died suddenly Sunday.

A memorial service for Haydon will be held tomorrow at the state Capitol.

Beshear said in a statement he and his wife are devastated by Haydon’s passing.    The 62 year old Haydon had served in state and local government for over three decades in various capacities and earned the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
