Narratives in Wood: Essential Elijah Pierce Exhibit at KMAC

  Elijah Pierce was one of Ohio’s most acclaimed self-taught artists and one of the first African American wood carvers to rise to international prominence during his lifetime. Born in rural Mississippi near the turn of the century, Pierce lived and developed his artistic eye in a Columbus, Ohio barbershop three and a half blocks from the Columbus Museum of Art, where many of his significant pieces now reside. Pierce died in 1984.

Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft Opens Hands-On MakerSpace

MakerSpace is a new hands-on art activity experience at Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft.

Museum visitors are used to rules. No flash photography. Use inside voices. Look, don't touch. But at Kentucky Musem of Art and Craft's new MakerSpace, touching is encouraged. The interactive stations are designed to connect patrons with the museum's exhibits through a series of hands-on art experiences.

“It’s supposed to enhance the exploratory art experience for all of our visitors by having them use their different senses,” says coordinator of educational programming and public outreach Sarah McCartt-Jackson.

'Happiness, at a Cost': Art in the Fly-Over States at KMAC's 'The 7 Borders' Exhibit

Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft's exhibit "The 7 Borders," which explores the regional identity of Kentucky's seven border states, closes Sunday. But first, two of the artists will give talks on their work on Saturday at 1 p.m. Designer Mark Moskovitz and sculptor/installation artist Leticia Bajuyo will discuss the Midwest's influence on their work.

Rachel Grimes to Play 'Caligari' Piano at KMAC

Louisville pianist and composer Rachel Grimes (Rachel's, Kings Daughters and Sons) is the latest musician to perform at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft this month.

Included in their on-going Wendell Castle: Forms Within Forms exhibit is a Steinway Art Case piano designed by Castle, and KMAC is hosting a series of performances pairing innovative musicians with the musical work of art.

New Exhibit Explores Storytelling in Craft

'Hollers and Harvests' Exhibit Blends Folk, Contemporary Art

In Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” a shiny black monolith appears to a group of prehistoric apes. The monolith communicates with the apes, and they learn how to use tools, and eventually evolve into human beings.

Fast-forward to the 21st century, and the monolith reappears in Louisville with the smell of warm alfalfa hay.

KMAC Studio Glass Exhibit Extended

The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft is extending the 50 Years of Studio Glass exhibit through July 29. The exhibition celebrates the first half-century of the studio art glass movement in the United States. It's part of a national effort that includes live glass demonstrations, lectures and exhibits at museums and universities across the country.

Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft Names New Associate Curator

Louisville gallery director Joey Yates is joining the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft artistic staff. As associate curator, Yates will help manage exhibitions, organize public events and contribute to educational outreach.

The associate curatorial role will be significant. Executive director Aldy Milliken says going forward, the museum’s exhibitions will inform everything from programming events to what’s in stock at the museum store.
