Untapable Runs Away With Kentucky Oaks Win

Untapable surged past My Miss Sophia entering the stretch and rolled to a 4½-length victory Friday in the 140th Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Rosie Napravnik and breaking from the far 13th spot, the overwhelming favorite in the $1 million race for 3-year-old fillies earned her third straight victory and fifth in seven starts. Untapable has won her last three by a combined margin of nearly 22 lengths.

LMPD Boosts Security As Kentucky Derby Weekend Approaches

Louisville Metro Police are boosting security details in the final days of celebrations for the Kentucky Derby.

LMPD officials said the department will  work with local, state and federal agencies—including the homeland security department—to ensure the safety.

Maj. Kelly Jones, commander for LMPD’s special operations, said officers are also constantly monitoring social media, watching for potential threats.

“We don’t know of any threat that is a threat to safety at any event for any of our citizens right now,” he said.

Kentucky Oaks Favorite Untapable Gets Outside Post

  The favorite for Friday's Kentucky Oaks will start the mile and 1/8 race from the outside post.

The post draw was held Tuesday. Untapable will be ridden by Rosie Napravnik and is trained by Steve Asmussen. Fashion Plate, written by Gary Stevens and trained by Simon Callaghan, starts from the seventh position and is the second choice at 6-1.

Churchill Downs' Officials Prep for Kentucky Oaks

The fight against breast and ovarian cancers will again be the focus of Kentucky Oaks Day at Churchill Downs.

The 140th running of the Kentucky Oaks will be preceded by the 6th annual Pink Out and Survivors Parade.  Both focus on raising awareness and funds for cancer research.

The 2014 Survivors Parade will include 140 people who have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer.

Kentucky Derby Post Draw is This Afternoon; Albarado to Ride Golden Soul

A full field of 20 horses is expected for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

The Derby post positions will be drawn later today.

An unexpected addition to the field was announced yesterday when the owners of Giant Finish announced that he would run.

Giant Finish has enough points in the new Derby qualifying system to take the 20th spot in the field, bumping Fear the Kitten from the list of 20 starters.   Fear the Kitten could get into the race if there's  a scratch.

Dreaming of Julia Leads Field of 11 in Kentucky Oaks

Dreaming of Julia

A field of 11 is set for Friday’s running of the 139th Kentucky Oaks.

The post positions for the fillies-only race were drawn this  morning at Churchill Downs.

The early favorite, at 3 -1, is Dreaming of Julia, one of four Todd Pletcher-trained entries.    Jockey John Velazquez will be aboard.

Dreaming of Julia is coming off an impressive victory last month in the Gulfstream Park Oaks, which she won by nearly 22 lengths. 

She'll  break from post position eight in the Kentucky Oaks.

Churchill Downs and Louisville Metro Police Outline Kentucky Derby, Oaks Security Plans

Churchill Downs officials, Louisville Metro Police and others discuss security plans for the Kentucky Derby and Oaks.

It's becoming a common refrain.

As with Thunder Over Louisville, Louisville Metro Police are urging attendees to the Kentucky Derby and Oaks to report suspicious activity, in a bid to heighten security after last week's bombing at the Boston Marathon.

"If you see something, say something," said Maj. Kelly Jones of Louisville Metro Police. "Find the nearest police officer, tell him or her, 'Hey it doesn't look right,' or, 'This is suspicious,' or, 'It bothers me.' We'll be happy to address it. That's why we're here—to serve the public and make sure everybody is safe."

Albarado Pleads Not Guilty to Assault

Jockey Robby Albarado has pleaded not guilty to an assault charge. The veteran rider is charged in an alleged case of domestic violence.

Albarado’s attorney, Scott Barton, entered the plea today in Jefferson District Court to the misdemeanor charge. A July trial date was set. The jockey was arrested Friday and charged with fourth-degree assault for allegedly accosting a woman who said she was trying to break up with him.
