Kentucky State Fair Attendance Increases 2.6 Percent

The just-concluded Kentucky State Fair drew 615,648 paid patrons this year—a 2.6-percent increase from 2012.

It's the largest number of attendees since 621,795 turned out in 2009.

“Certainly the weather had a lot to do with it. After all this is not your typical August weather. We had cool mornings, we had very low humidity, very little rain," said Amanda Storment, a spokeswoman for the Kentucky State Fair Board.

Attendance increased on both weekends, fair officials said.

Eating Healthfully and Crazily at the Kentucky State Fair

The Kentucky State Fair is famous for crazy food. Burgers with doughnuts replacing the bun, giant heaps of meat and fried candy bars join the typical fair foods like elephant ears and cotton candy.

But can you eat healthfully? And, if you want to live it up, how do you feel after eating the craziest state fair foods.

We decided to find out.

Kentucky State Fair Starts Quest on Monday for Temp Workers

The Kentucky State Fair will begin hiring temporary employees on Monday for this month’s festivities. 

The Fair needs 750 employees to work from mid-August to the end of the month. Some employees will need to work after the Fair closes on Aug. 25 for clean-up.

 The jobs will pay about $7.25 per hour, said Amanda Storment, a spokeswoman for the fair.

Kentucky State Fair to Have a Free Parking Lot on Weekends (if You're Willing to Ride a Shuttle)

In recent years, the Kentucky State Fair officials have witnessed issues with traffic congestion around the gates into the fairgrounds on the weekends.

They have a plan to address it during next month's fair—by spreading out the parking options.

This year, the Kentucky State Fair will have two new cheaper parking lots open on weekends in a bid to reduce traffic congestion around the fairgrounds.

Old Cardinal Stadium is "not on the verge of collapse"—but the grandstand and storage areas under them needs to be fixed or be taken out of service.

That's the verdict of a report released Wednesday on structural stability of the the 50-plus year-old stadium at the Kentucky State Fair & Exposition Center.

After Issues in 2012, Kentucky State Fair Considers Plans for Better Parking

After issues with automated gates in 2012, the Kentucky State Fair Board is working on a plan to ease traffic congestion into the 2013 state fair.

In 2011, automated parking gates were installed with the intention of getting fair-goers into the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center faster.

They didn’t. The automated machines took too long to accept bills, and sometimes patrons had to insert bills multiple times. Traffic began to congest at gates.

State Fair Attendance Drops

New calculations show that Kentucky State Fair attendance dropped slightly this year, but state officials say the event was still a success.

Attendance was just under 600,000 for the 11-day event. That's about 5,000 fewer people than the year before and the first time since 2008 that attendance was below 600,000.

Attendance has varied for the last decade, fluctuating by several thousand year to year.

Champion Country Ham Fetches $300,000

The grand champion country ham, displayed by Miss Kentucky Jessica Casebolt, was produced by Scott Hams of Greenville, Kentucky.

The Kentucky State Fair grand champion country ham fetched $300,000 at a charity auction today.

Since 1964, the top ham has been auctioned at the close of the Kentucky Farm Bureau country ham breakfast.

This year’s top bidder was Louisville optometrist Dr. Mark Lynn.

"Louisville has been very, very good to us, we’ve been very lucky in life. We feel very fortunate. I’ve got four great kids, seven great-grandkids and a wonderful wife and it’s time to give back," Lynn said.
