JCPS Holds Workshops in Louisville Neighborhoods Where Kindergarten Readiness Scores Were Lower

Earlier this year, Kentucky released results of screeners meant to show what percentage of this year's kindergartners entered with the skills needed for school.

The results showed vast differences in "kindergarten readiness" in children coming from Louisville's many neighborhoods.

Slightly more than half of this year's Jefferson County Public School kindergartners entered school ready, which, of course, means slightly less than half weren't.

For JCPS, the breakdown is: 47.7 percent weren't ready, 52.3 percent were ready. (Here's more on what "ready" means.)

Half of Kentucky's Kindergartners Entered Ready for School; JCPS Results Slightly Better

Half of Kentucky's kindergartners were ready in the fall to enter the public education system, and Jefferson County's youngest students were slightly more prepared, according to state data released Thursday afternoon.  

This school year all kindergarten students in the state were tested for readiness. Each child was tested as they entered school in five developmental areas, including social, emotional and academic skills.

Kentucky to Release Results of Kindergarten Readiness Screenings This Week

The Kentucky Department of Education plans to release the results of its kindergarten readiness screeners this week, officials say.

The screeners test whether children entering kindergarten have the social, emotional and motor skills needed to be successful in school. They're becoming increasingly popular with states that give priority to early intervention in schools.

Last year, 109 Kentucky school districts and more than 30,000 students were screened using the Brigance screeners.

Listen | Middletown Elementary Kindergarten Parents Drop Off Kids For First Time

Saying goodbye to your child as they enter school for the first time can be a mix of anxiousness, sadness, joy and everything in between. 

I went to Middletown Elementary School in the East Louisville, which has opened its doors to parents post-drop off for the past several years to help them cope, talk and take a breather after seeing their child enter the first of several classes they'll see for the next dozen years. They call it "Boo Hoo Breakfast."
