Denny Crum on Louisville Cardinals' Titles in the '80s: 'It Was a Beautiful Thing'

The Louisville men's basketball team plays for a national championship tonight—the program's first appearance in the title game since 1986. 

Denny Crum, the coach of the 1986 and 1980 championship teams, is in Atlanta for the Final Four. Naismith Hall of Fame coach retired in 2003. As this year's Cardinals prepare to play Michigan, Crum took a few moments to reflect with WFPL on what championships mean for the university and the city.

Louisville Cardinals to Play for Women's National Championship

The University of Louisville women’s basketball team has joined the men’s program in playing for a NCAA championship this week.

Antonita Slaughter led the fifth-seeded Cards with 18 points as U of L advanced to the title game with a 64-57 comeback victory tonight over number two seed California.

U of L will face Connecticut for the women’s championship Tuesday in New Orleans.  The Huskies defeated Notre Dame in the other national semifinal.

For Some Louisville Cardinals Fans, Two Final Four Teams Means Twice the Travel

ATLANTA — The Louisville Cardinals men's basketball team will play in the NCAA tournament's title game Monday night against the Michigan Wolverines at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. And in New Orleans tonight, the Cardinal women’s basketball team plays California in a semifinal.

A few ambitious Cardinal fans will be in the audience for both games.

And, as expected, fans took to the streets throughout the city to celebrate.

Louisville Cardinals Advance to National Championship Game

The Louisville Cardinals advanced Saturday evening to the NCAA Tournament championship game, but not before getting a scare from the Wichita State Shockers.

The overall No. 1-seeded Cardinals trailed by a point at halftime and through most of the second half to the No. 9 seed Shockers, but managed to come back as the game closed.

The Cardinals won 72-68.

Russ Smith led UofL with 21 points.

ESPN: Rick Pitino to Join Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

Louisville Cardinals men's basketball coach Rick Pitino will join the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, joining his predecessor Denny Crum, ESPN is reporting.

The announcement for the 2013 Hall of Fame class will be made Monday, ESPN added.

Pitino was nominated in 2012 but was not elected.

On Wednesday, Louisville Cardinals guard Kevin Ware spoke at news conference attended by every local media outlet and several national news outlets. They all were curious about Ware's right leg, which he broke in Sunday's Elite Eight game before a national televised audience.
