What 'Occasional' Really Means Is Key to Sierra Club's Planned Lawsuit Against LG&E

Last week, environmental groups announced their plans to sue Louisville Gas & Electric for pollution the company releases into the Ohio River from its Mill Creek power plant in Louisville. Sierra Club organizers took a year’s worth of time lapse photos from a hidden camera across the river from the plant, and captured a near-constant flow of water from Mill Creek’s coal ash pond into the river.

Louisville Gas & Electric Proposes Expansion of Energy Efficiency Programs

Louisville Gas and Electric is asking for permission from state regulators to expand five of its energy efficiency programs and introduce a new one. The company filed to make the changes last week with the Public Service Commission.

In the PSC filing, LG&E is asking for authorization to expand some of its current energy efficiency programs…like increasing the number of rebates available for certain appliances and adding more incentives for customers to make energy upgrades to homes after getting a home energy audit.

Cane Run Power Plant Neighbors Sue LG&E Over Coal Ash

Several  of the residents living near the Cane Run Power Plant in Southwest Louisville filed a lawsuit on Monday against Louisville Gas & Electric and parent company PPL over persistent coal ash issues in the neighborhood.

JCPS Approves Frost Middle School Redesign Despite Air Quality Concerns

The Jefferson County school board approved school redesigns in the southwest, which aim to attract more students living in the area that are leaving for better options. But board member Chris Brady says students may now be exposed longer to air that doesn't meet quality standards. 

“Would you want your children or your grandchildren to go to Frost. The answer for me is simply no. In my view this proposal puts our children at increased risk and should be denied,” he says.

LG&E Agrees to Pay $113,000 for Coal Ash, Odor Violations at Cane Run Plant

Louisville Gas and Electric and the Air Pollution Control District have reached an agreement over violations at the company’s Cane Run Power Station. Under the deal, LG&E will pay $113,250 to the Air Pollution Control District, as well as continue implementing a compliance plan at Cane Run to prevent future violations.

Gas-Fired Power Plant Proposed for Western Kentucky

Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities have announced plans to build a new natural gas powered generating plant in western Kentucky and a smaller, solar-powered station. 

Spokeswoman Chris Whelan says the facility planned for Muhlenberg County will be similar to the generating plant being built at the companies’ Cane Run site in Jefferson County.

"It will be 700 megawatts, roughly $700 million to construct," Whelan said.

"And then we’re also proposing we will build a 10 megawatt solar facility at one of our existing sites."

LG&E Fined $65,000 for Odor Problems at Cane Run Power Plant

Louisville Gas and Electric is facing a $65,000 fine for alleged violations at the company’s Cane Run Power Plant. This is the latest of several Notice of Violations the company has received for problems at the plant in the past two years.
