Two Full-Time Minimum Wage Jobs Needed to Pay for a 2-Bedroom Apartment in Louisville

Louisvillians must earn $14.07 per hour at a full-time job to afford the $731 cost for a two-bedroom apartment in the metro area, said a recent study from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Louisville minimum-wage earners need nearly two full-time jobs to cover those rent costs—a difficult proposition for single parents.

The analysis considers fair market rent for a "decent" apartment, which calculating that renters would spend no more than 30 percent of their earnings on housing.

Councilman Ken Fleming Questions Mayor Fischer's Local Option Sales Tax Proposal

Louisville Metro Councilman Ken Fleming, R-7, is concerned that Mayor Greg Fischer’s push for a local option sales tax will burden residents and wants to examine cutting other levies first.

For several months the mayor has been lobbying that the city needs the tool to be more competitive and independent.

Fischer argues his administration is not seeking a tax increase, and only wants voters to have the power to decide whether or not to fund special projects through a temporary hike to the state's sales tax.

But Fleming says the mayor has provided few details on what a specific proposal would look like, and is ignoring his campaign promises to spur economic development and job creation.

"Their goal should be economic development, and adding an additional tax on individuals regardless of income is not the right way to go," he says. "What we need to focus on is to try to find those strategies and tactics like getting rid of the occupational tax. That will help development incur job creation. I think we ought to look at that process and not a tax mentality."

UofL, Farm to Table Team For More Local Foods

Louisville’s Farm to Table organization is working with the University of Louisville help the university source more of its food locally.

Sarah Fritschner, who leads Farm to Table, has been instrumental in streamlining communication between food service providers, major distributors, and local vendors. Recently, the university hosted a catering fair to introduce local producers and larger distributors.

Louisville Metro Seeking Public Comment on Insight/Time Warner

Louisville Metro government will host four public meetings in November seeking public input on the cable television service provided by Insight/Time Warner.

The meetings will be:

  • 6 p.m. Nov. 28 at the East Government Center, 200 Juneau Drive
  • 6 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Southwest Government Center, 72189 Dixie HIghway
  • 6 p.m. Nov. 29 at Metro Hall, 527 W. Jefferson St.
  • 6 p.m. Nov. 29 at the South Central Government Center, 7201 Outer Loop
