2014 Kentucky Primary: Bill Hollander Wins District 9 Race, Hopes to Win Opponents' Support

After a crowded, 13-person primary, Bill Hollander has emerged as the Democratic candidate for the Louisville Metro Council's 9th District.

Hollander had Mayor Greg Fischer's endorsement and a fundraising advantage over most of his opponents.

“It takes some funds to get your name out and to get your message out, particularly in a field of 13 people, but I think the most important factor was direct contact with voters," he says.

How much does money matter in a Louisville Metro Council race?

In the crowded Democratic primary for the District 9 seat, three candidates have a huge fundraising edge in the 13-person primary election over their opponents.

University of Louisville fundraiser J.P. Davis and attorney Bill Hollander, who are vying for the seat, have reportedly raised approximately $50,000 each, according to the campaign finance reports filed 32 days ahead of Election Day.

Former assistant county attorney Chris Hartley has raised just over $37,000 in this contest.

Joining a chorus of Democratic candidates, retiring Louisville Metro Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh says she disagrees with Mayor Greg Fischer's decision to endorse in the District 9 primary race.

This past Saturday, Fischer announced he is supporting attorney Bill Hollander in a crowded field of 13 contenders.

Many of the council candidates running to replace Ward-Pugh, however, called the mayor's decision inappropriate.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer Endorses Bill Hollander for Metro Council District 9

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer is endorsing Democrat Bill Hollander in the District 9 Metro Council race.

Hollander is running against a dozen other candidates in a crowded primary field for the seat, which includes the Clifton Heights, Crescent Hill and St. Matthews neighborhoods.

This is the first candidate Fischer has officially endorsed for Metro Council since becoming mayor.

"I think this is a great opportunity for Louisville to have him on the council," Fischer says.

Two Louisville Attorneys Seeking Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh’s Seat

Two Louisville attorneys are vying for Democratic Metro Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh’s seat next year.

Ward-Pugh announced earlier this month she won't seek re-election from the 9th District seat she's held since the inaugural council formed in 2002.

The race is expected to draw a crowded field of candidates, but Democrat Christopher Hartley and Republican Laura Rice, both attorneys, are the first to file.
