Mammoth Cave Store Stops Selling Alcohol

Attention Kentucky cavers: drunken spelunkin' is now BYOB.

After Aug. 17, the campground store in Mammoth Cave National Park will no longer sell alcohol.

The store started selling alcohol last year, and park rangers noticed a sharp increase in criminal offenses related to alcohol.

"DUI, public intoxication, open container and so forth and so on," says Chief Park Ranger Brad McDougal. "The increase in the workload was really just too much for our current manpower levels."

New Mammoth Cave Superintendent Excited to Return to Kentucky

The National Park Service has appointed a new superintendent for Mammoth Cave National Park, near Bowling Green.

Sarah Craighead has worked at Mammoth Cave National Park before…but that was in 1979. She grew up near the park, and credits it with getting her started in the park system.

Since then, she’s headed up parks in Oklahoma and Arizona. She’s currently the superintendent of Death Valley National Park, and has also worked in parks in Maine and Virginia.

Mammoth Cave National Park Names New Superintendent

Mammoth Cave National Park has named a new superintendent, and she is the first woman to serve in that capacity in the park’s history.

Sarah Craighead will replace Patrick Reed, who retired at the end of June. She’s currently the superintendent at Death Valley National Park, which straddles parts of California and Nevada. She’s also worked at national parks in Arizona, Oklahoma and Maine, among others.
