Kentucky's Long History of International Diplomacy

Today in Washington, Louisville businessman Matthew Barzun will be sworn in as the United States ambassador to the Court of St. James’—in other words, the United Kingdom. As such, he joins a long line of Kentuckians who have gone off to represent their government in foreign capitals.

Actually, this is Mr. Barzun’s second ambassadorship. In the first Obama term, he served as our minister to Sweden. He seems to be the first Louisvillian ever to hold posts to two countries.

Louisville Businessman Matthew Barzun Selected as U.S. Ambassador to Britain

President Obama has nominated Louisville entrepreneur Matthew Barzun to be the next U.S. ambassador to Britain.

A major fundraiser for the president, Barzun served as finance chairman for the Obama re-election campaign last fall.

The selection had been rumored since January, when the New York Times noted Barzun, a tech executive, was in the running for the coveted foreign relations position along with Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour.

Report: Matthew Barzun Next U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain

Kentucky businessman Matthew Barzun will be the next U.S. ambassador to Great Britain, CBS News is reporting.

The appointment has long been expected—Barzun has been a key fundraiser in President Barack Obama's 2008 and 2012 campaigns, serving as chair of Obama's national finance committee in the most recent election.

Team Mitch Ad Mocks Democratic Candidate Search

In the first ad of the 2014 Kentucky Senate race, Republican Mitch McConnell pokes fun at Democrats for being unable to find an opponent for the general election.

The online spot utilizes clips of President Obama, and shows him looking at a number of rumored challengers including actress Ashley Judd, former U.S. Ambassador Matthew Barzun and Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

It also notes how a number of prominent Democrats in the state have said flat out they are not interested in taking on McConnell in 2014.

Kentuckians Will Play An Off-Camera Role at DNC

As Democrats head to Charlotte, North Carolina this week for the Democratic National Convention, many Kentucky delegates will be going for the first time.

Auditor Adam Edelen is one of those first-timers. Edelen says he thinks his party will show why they truly are the best representatives and supporters of the middle class.

Edelen says former President Bill Clinton will likely be the best messenger for that campaign at the convention.
