Mitch McConnell, Alison Lundergan Grimes Trade Blows While Discussing Kentucky Farm Policy

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes traded familiar barbs Wednesday while discussing agricultural issues at the Kentucky Farm Bureau headquarters in Louisville.

The 90-minute forum offered voters one of the few opportunities to contrast the two candidates in person, and covered a wide range of topics from the farm bill, immigration reform, and Affordable Care Act.

McConnell, 72, used the forum to showcase his role in tobacco settlements, Kentucky’s hemp pilot project and his overall clout in Washington.

It is their first joint appearance since the Fancy Farm picnic, and the setting is expected to be a far more calm and controlled.  The farm bureau plans to live-stream the forum.

Report: Alison Lundergan Grimes May Have Received Illegal Campaign Help From Her Father

Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes is drawing criticism for receiving discounted services from her well-connected father that may have violated a federal campaign finance law.

In a story first reported by Politico on Tuesday, a company owned by Jerry Lundergan bought the 45-foot-long Grimes campaign bus and reportedly rented it to his daughter far below the fair market value.

Mitch McConnell Accepts KET Debate With Alison Lundergan Grimes

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has accepted an invitation to debate Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes next month in Kentucky's closely watched U.S. Senate race.

McConnell's re-election team agreed to appear on KET's Kentucky Tonight program on October 13, according to a statement released Monday by the television network.

"KET is proud to be trusted by the candidates and Kentucky’s voters to provide a fair and independent platform in this pivotal U.S. Senate race," KET chief executive Shae Hopkins said.

A report linking Republican Mitch McConnell’s wife to an aggressive anti-coal campaign has drawn angry reactions from the Kentucky senator’s re-election team.

McConnell is on a two-day bus tour in the eastern half of the state, countering stops earlier this week by Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes.

On Wednesday, Grimes told a Hazard audience that  she was the more pro-coal candidate.

HAZARD—Speaking as if Republican Senator Mitch McConnell were in the room, Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes told an Eastern Kentucky crowd Wednesday afternoon that she is the true champion of coal in the U.S. Senate race.

"Senator, let’s set the record straight. I’m the only pro-coal candidate in this race," said Grimes, joined on stage by former President Bill Clinton and members of the United Mine Workers of America.

Grimes' campaign filled the Hal Rogers Center in Hazard beyond its capacity. The optics were clear—these coal miners have her back.

The latest controversy marks the second time during this year's Senate contest in which Democratic operatives have mentioned the Asian heritage of McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao.
