Amy Harder of the National Journal has a story out today about the United Mine Workers of America, and the union's reluctance to back either presidential candidate this year.

Harder went to Fairmont, West Virginia and spoke with UMWA official (and Democratic member of the state House of Delegates) Mike Caputo.

Given a position over his father, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is listed as one of the speakers at the Republican National Convention that will officially make former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney the party's nominee.

In an effort to reach out the libertarian and Tea Party-minded members of the Republican Party, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, the son of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, will also have a speaking role.

Many of Kentucky’s most prominent elected officials are opting to skip this year’s Fancy Farm political picnic.

Governor Steve Beshear and Lt. Gov. Jerry Abramson announced yesterday, that they would skip the picnic. House Speaker Greg Stumbo will speak in Beshear’s place. 

Now, Fancy Farm organizers say U.S. Senator Rand Paul will skip the picnic as well. Kentucky’s other U.S. Senator, Mitch McConnell, has not yet confirmed to speak.

Update: Picnic emcee and Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer says, despite claims from Fancy Farm officials, no surrogate has been named. This story has been modified.
