WFPL Launching Film Podcast: Sound on Film

Starting this week, WFPL will bring you a new program: Sound on Film.

It's a weekly podcast hosted by Chris Ritter and Robert Kahne. It's news and reviews, with the occasional special guest from the local or national film scene. Chris and Robert have been hosting the show in some form since they were in college, and we're excited to have their expertise and energy on display for WFPL.

Special Programming to Remember John F. Kennedy

Friday is the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination. In remembrance, WFPL will air two specials, one marking the assassination, the other remembering the funeral three days later.

Friday 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.: We Knew JFK: Unheard Stories from the Kennedy Archive

This new documentary contains never-before-broadcast interviews with people close to JFK, recorded after the assassination. Journalist Robert MacNeil hosts. 

Monday, Nov. 25 8 p.m. - 9 p.m.: Jean Shepherd Eulogizes JFK

WFPL's Food & Drink Week Starts Wednesday


This week, WFPL is turning your radio into a cornucopia.

Beginning Wednesday, it's our inaugural Food & Drink Week. In Morning Edition, Here &  Now and All Things Considered, you'll hear stories about Louisville food, drink, farming and eating from the WFPL Newsroom. Highlights include an oral history of bourbon, a profile of Old Forrester, a look at how urban chicken keeping has become a bit mundane and holiday memories and recipes from Edward Lee, Mayor Greg Fischer and others.

And we'll have your favorite holiday specials on Thanksgiving:

Lifelong Listening to Louisville Public Media

For most of my life, I’ve been at the other end of the radio experience—tuning in wherever I go and keeping abreast with news, features, sports and music through broadcasting. But for most of my professional life, I was a print guy, a writer and editor for newspapers since I was 16, and at The Courier-Journal since I was 18. Until early this year, I never regularly sat at behind the microphone. Now, thanks to the folks at Louisville Public Media, I am enjoying the power of the airwaves, and it is gratifying indeed.

WFPL's Phillip Bailey and Laura Ellis Get National Recognition


Monday night in New York City, WFPL—specifically, reporter Phillip Bailey and producer Laura Ellis—will be nationally recognized with the  Radio Television Digital News Association's Unity Award. 

The award will be handed out during the 2013 Edward R. Murrow Awards, presented to the best in broadcasting. This specific recognition is for coverage of diversity issues—other Unity Award winners this year include ESPN and The Boston Globe.

Hello. I've worked at WFPL for almost six years, doing everything from reporting and blogging to supervising people who report and blog. But now I'm here to talk to you about the future and your role in it.

It's pledge drive time. You know. You hear us on air. We're hoping to raise $500,000 by Saturday. We're also hoping to get 1,500 new members. And that's the important number.

WFPL Panel Discussion on 'Building a Healthier Louisville' Today


Last month, the Greater Louisville Project released a study that said how long residents live depends largely on their level of educational attainment and their neighborhood. 

City leaders said they wanted the study to galvanize residents to act upon the health issues facing Louisville. 

The study will be the topic of a WFPL panel discussion  on Monday in Louisville Public Media's performance studio.
