Kentucky Leads Charge in Next Generation Science Standards, Despite Challenges

Kentucky is among several states preparing to introduce new science standards in public schools and, like many of the others, the state has seen opposition to the standards from a vocal minority.

But the debate has been a bit more heated here and some have even called the state's adoption of the standards the most contentious in the country.

“Everybody is watching what everybody else is doing,” says Josh Rosenau, policy director at the National Center for Science Education.

Kentucky Education Committee Passes on Hearing Science Standards, Official Adoption Near

Kentucky’s new science standards have taken a step closer to becoming officially adopted this week.

The Next Generation Science Standards—which were developed by 26 states including Kentucky—were rejected by a small regulation committee earlier this year.

Public Opposition to Kentucky's New Education Science Standards Delays Process for Creating Tests

Public opposition to Kentucky's new science standards has delayed the process for creating student tests tailored to the new material, a state education official says.

The Kentucky Department of Education now plans to delay testing (or assessments) on the Next Generation Science Standards until 2016, at least,  the official says.

What's Next For Kentucky's New Science Standards?

Kentucky’s new science standards could face more legislative opposition, but educators are expected to convene as early as this month to begin training for implementation for the 2014-2015 school year.
