Mediation Ordered in University of Louisville, Norton Dispute Over Kosair Children's Hospital

A judge has ordered the University of Louisville and Norton Healthcare into mediation in the on-going dispute over Kosair Children's Hospital.

Norton operates Kosair Children's Hospital, which sits on state-owned land in downtown Louisville. Its lease calls for the land to be used to the benefit of the state and UofL. Norton announced over the summer that it'd agreed to partner in operating Kosair Children's and Lexington's Kentucky Children's Hospital with its operator, University of Kentucky HealthCare.

Norton Healthcare officials say a meeting with University of Louisville leaders this week was "constructive" and the two sides plan to meet again soon.

U of L criticized Norton for entering into a partnership with UK Healthcare for the use of Louisville’s Kosair Children’s Hospital, which Norton owns. The hospital sits on state-owned land and under state rules must benefit U of L and Kentucky citizens.

University of Louisville, Norton Healthcare to Meet on Kosair Children's Hospital Issue

The University of Louisville and Norton Healthcare officials will meet next week to discuss issues surrounding Norton's intention to partner with UK Healthcare in running Kosair Children's Hospital, the university and healthcare system said on Tuesday.

"Both organizations have agreed that there be a meeting early next week to discuss the legal issues which Norton believes must be resolved before productive discussions can occur regarding an update to the existing 2008 academic affiliation agreement," said Thomas Johnson, a spokesman for Norton.

Updated: Norton Healthcare officials have responded to allegations that they're breaching a land-lease agreement by partnering with UK Healthcare.

Last week, Norton and UK officials announced the intent to jointly run Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville to improve pediatric care in the state. The University of Louisville is also a partner there and U of L officials say they've been trying to create a long-term agreement with Norton for the past several years.

The University of Louisville is giving Norton Healthcare 30 days to back out of an agreement with the University of Kentucky to jointly operate Kosair Children's Hospital.

Norton announced the partnership last week, saying it wanted to strengthen pediatric care in the commonwealth. This surprised U of L officials, who have also been trying to negotiate a similar contract with Norton.

The University of Louisville is blasting a plan for Kosair Children's Hospital and the Kentucky Children's Hospital in Lexington to "join forces."

Kosair Children's—run by Norton Healthcare—and the UK HealthCare-operated Kentucky Children's Hospital announced late Thursday that their leaders had signed a letter of intent to be jointly operated but remain independent through a new collaboration.
