Kentucky Demolishes First "Visual Step" in Bridges Project

Several buildings along Main Street across from Louisville Slugger Field have sat empty for more than a quarter of a century. Graffiti decorates the walls inside and outside of the complex, which state officials have deemed contaminated.

The buildings also stand in the way of the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Kentucky officials are now celebrating the first "visual step" that shows the $2.6 billion bridge project is moving forward, despite several bureaucratic processes that have yet to play out.

Bridges Project Passes Major Hurdle

The Federal Highway Administration approved the bi-state authority’s record of decision for the Ohio River Bridges Project Wednesday, while Kentucky officials say questions over tolls and a pending lawsuit will not stand in the way of construction. 

“We got by the biggest hurdle today," said Gary Valentine, project manager with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Federal Government Approves Record of Decision for Bridges Project

Ohio River Bridges Project

The Federal Highway Administration has signed off on the latest record of decision for the Ohio River Bridges Project.

The new approval became necessary early last year, when Mayor Greg Fischer, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels changed the project to cut the cost from $4.1 billion to $2.6 billion. The approval brings the start of construction one step closer.

Still remaining is an agreement to toll the existing Interstate 65 and the selection of firms to build the two bridges.

Arena Authority Wants New Management; Indiana Will Pay for East End Tunnel

It's been a busy few months for the Kentucky Fair Board; most recently, the Arena Authority voted Monday to pursue new management for the YUM Center. The Courier-Journal's Marcus Green joined us on Friday's Byline to catch us up.

Later in the segment, Marcus was joined by the Indianapolis Star's Chris Sikich. Both reporters have covered the bridges project and they talked about the latest in bridge news.

Preliminary East End Bridge Work Set for August

Ohio River Bridges Project

Indiana officials are advertising for bids for preparatory work on the state‘s portion of the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Will Wingfield says construction will begin this summer on a road extension between Utica, Indiana and the River Ridge Commerce Center.

It’s the first step toward construction of a new east end bridge.
