Indiana legislators have given final approval to a bill tightening the limits on how much consumers can buy of cold and allergy pills often used to make methamphetamine.

The state Senate voted 43-5 today in favor lowering the annual purchase limit of pseudoephedrine-based products to about 61 grams per person. That's about an eight-month supply of the current law's monthly limit.

The bill also increases the criminal penalties for anyone convicted of buying at least 10 grams of the medicines for a meth maker.

Local officials from around Indiana are making a push for the legislature to require that people obtain a doctor's prescription in order to buy cold medications often used to make methamphetamine.

The Senate's Corrections and Criminal Law Committee voted 10-0 today (Tues) in favor of the bill that would allow the purchase of up to 61 grams a year of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. That's about an eight-month total of the current law's monthly limit of 7.2 grams.

Some police groups have pushed for a state law requiring a doctor's prescription for those medicines, but the bill doesn't take that step.

On Thursday, dozens of laws passed in this year’s legislative session will become active.

One of those laws limits the amount of pseudoephedrine a person can buy from a pharmacy. Pseudoephedrine, or PSE, is used in many cold and allergy medicines. It’s also a key part of meth production.

The new law limits adults to seven point two grams a month, which is roughly the equivalent of a box, before requiring a prescription.
