McConnell, Paul Vote Against U.N. Disability Treaty

Credit U.S. Senate

Visibly frail and in a wheelchair, Bob Dole reappeared on the U.S. Senate floor Tuesday to support ratification of a treaty advocates say will help disabled people worldwide. Dole served in the Senate from 1969 to 1996, many of those years as the Republican leader. He'd been the Republican's 1996 presidential nominee, the Republicans 1976 vice-presidential nominee and the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

Rand Paul Previews VP Debate

U.S. Senate

U.S. Senator Rand Paul says Congressman Paul Ryan doesn’t have much pressure on him to win tonight’s vice presidential debate.

The debate, held at Centre College in Danville, will have Ryan facing off with Vice President Joe Biden.

After Republican nominee Mitt Romney rejuvenated his campaign in the first debate, some pundits have said the pressure is on Ryan to continue the momentum. But Senator Paul says Ryan should do just fine.

Rand Paul Promotes Compromise As GOP Senate Takeover Chances Dwindle

U.S. Senate

As Election Day nears, it’s becoming less clear who will hold the Senate majority next year.

Earlier this year, most pundits were ready to hand over the keys to the U.S. Senate to Kentucky’s senior senator, Mitch McConnell.

But now, a GOP takeover looks less likely. “I know there are four or five seats we think we can pick up, there are two or three we have to hang onto. We might lose one or two of the ones we have to hang onto, but then we might pick up three or four," says Senator Rand Paul.

Paul Says GOP Should Tone Down Hawkishness on War

U.S. Senate

Senator Rand Paul says his party needs to break away from its base when it comes to war.

In the past, politicians have had a tough time breaking from the base to change party opinion. Think Bill Clinton and welfare reforms.

But Rand Paul says Republicans need to take a similar step on war, and tone down the hawkishness of recent years.

“Well one issue I’ve sided with President Obama on is that I think the war in Afghanistan should end," says Paul. There aren’t many other Republicans saying that, but I think it is time to come home.”

Rand Paul Joins "Skewed Polls" Bandwagon, But Says Romney Needs Strong Debate Performances

Senator Rand Paul has joined many of his fellow Republicans in doubting the accuracy of polls in this year’s presidential race.

In recent weeks, President Barack Obama has seen his lead widen significantly in two battleground states that border Kentucky: Ohio and Virginia. Obama's lead is also widening in national polls and in other battleground states.

In response, Republicans have dismissed the polls, saying they aren’t accurately reflecting changes in the country’s voting blocs since 2008.

Observers: Paul's RNC Speech Forceful

U.S. Senate

U.S. Senator Rand Paul may not have received a prime time speech slot at  this week's Republican National Convention, but he still managed to get attention.

Observers like University Louisville political science professor Dewey Clayton say the younger Paul is seen as a potential bridge between the current GOP establishment and they loyal followers of his father, Congressman Ron Paul.

Clayton says the build-up to Rand Paul's speech Wednesday night furthered that, with a video tribute to his father, who is exiting politics after decades in Congress.

The schedule shuffling at this year’s Republican National Convention won’t cost any Kentucky politicians their speaking slots.
