With the NCAA's Top Seed, Pitino's Cards Set Sights on Next Goal

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino says his team has worked hard to earn its top overall seed in the NCAA tournament, but the Cards are not dwelling on the designation.

Pitino says its one of many steps toward the ultimate goal of winning a national championship.

"When we lost three in a row, we set goals.   We set regular season goals, we set tournament goals, we set seeding goals.  Now you go on to your next goal.  Until it ends, you just keep putting forth goals to your basketball team," Pitino said today.

Pitino Again a Finalist for Basketball Hall of Fame

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is once again a finalist for election to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Pitino is among 12 finalists for the Class of 2013; others include former players Tim Hardaway and Gary Payton, and former coaches Jerry Tarkanian and Guy Lewis.

The U of L coach, who has taken three different schools to the Final Four and won a championship at Kentucky in 1996, was also a finalist last year but did not make the final cut.

College Basketball: Cards Visit Seton Hall; Behanan Out With Ankle Injury

After a week off, the third-ranked Louisville Cardinals return to the basketball court tomorrow with a visit to Seton Hall.

U of L will have to play without forward Chane Behanan. The Cards’ leading rebounder will be sidelined for up to ten days with an ankle sprain suffered in practice Monday.

This is the Cards’ first Big East road game in what coach Rick Pitino promises will be an unpredictable conference run.

Louisville Cardinals Stuck in Conference Realignment Turmoil, Again

This week, Maryland and Rutgers bolted from the ACC and the Big East, respectively, to the Big Ten (or B1G, as they call it now).

Just like that, the appearance of a fragile peace among college athletics conferences shattered.

The re-arranging again jolted the University of Louisville -- not that the last round of conference realignment ended ideally for the Cardinals, stuck in a Big East whose football membership spanned from San Diego to Annapolis.

So where does this leave UofL? Searching still, it seems.

Hoosiers, Cardinals and Wildcats 1-2-3 in Pre-Season Men's Basketball AP Poll

The three projected best teams in men's college basketball are within a two-hour drive of Louisville.

Indiana is No. 1 in The Associated Press' preseason Top 25 for the third time and the first since the 1979-80 season.

The Hoosiers return all five starters, including 7-foot sophomore Cody Zeller.

They received 43 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Friday. Louisville and Kentucky, the teams ranked second and third, received the rest of the first-place votes with Louisville getting 20 and the defending national champion the other two.

Jurich Pressing Pitino to Extend Contract

University of Louisville Athletic Director Tom Jurich wants men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino to sign a another contract extension that would keep him at U of L until he’s 70 years old.

Pitino’s current contract expires in 2017, but Jurich says he’s been after the coach to sign on for an additional five years.

The two joked about it briefly during a press conference Monday.

"We get to extend your contract, don’t we?" asked Jurich.

"Yeah," Pitino fired back. "So I can die on the court."

Sypher's Appeal Rejected

A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of a the woman who tried to extort millions in cash, cars and a house from University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino.

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals today found that attorneys for 52-year-old Karen Sypher ``advanced no arguments of merit on appeal.''

In 2010, a jury convicted Sypher of extortion, lying to the FBI and retaliation against a witness. Prosecutors said she sought the money from Pitino to stay quiet about a tryst in a Louisville restaurant.

Pitino Announces Staff Changes

University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino has announced two new additions to his staff and a new role for a current staff member. 

Kareem Richardson (at left in photo) is the Cards’ new assistant coach, a vacancy that was created by the departure of associate coach Richard Pitino to Florida International University two weeks ago.

Rick Pitino says Richardson has become a top-level recruiter during his 15 year coaching career, most recently at Xavier.
