What's Next in the JCPS School of Innovation Competition?

For the four School of Innovation finalists, the next few months will focus on shaping their concepts into more concrete proposals.

For Jefferson County Public Schools, the work over the next 17 months or so includes helping those teams develop their plans, looking to the board to make a decision and decide on funding, and then working to get the school open in the 2015-16 academic year.

To the point: Opening a School of Innovation will mean an allocation of resources amid parallel reviews of facilities and magnet school programs.

Jefferson County Public Schools will on Monday night unveil the finalists from the 48 community submissions to design a new school.

The school district plans to open the winning School of Innovation design in the 2015-16 academic year. Last month, JCPS unveiled 12 semifinalists in the competition. Submitters included several teams of JCPS teachers, a group of Louisville museum leaders and a team of educators from Michigan.

JCPS Gets 48 'School of Innovation' Proposals At Deadline

The deadline to submit proposals for designing the next Jefferson County public school has passed, and officials say 48 individuals or groups are moving on for review.

Initially, more than 80 groups expressed interest in the School of Innovation Design Competition—which set out to change the look of public education. 

The final 48 submissions will be more than enough to determine a set of strong semi-finalists, says Jonathan Lowe, who helps lead the project for JCPS.

JCPS Wants You To Design The First 'School of Innovation'

If you could design your own school, what would it look like?

That’s the question posed to Jefferson County residents by the school district, which will consider the best idea for creating the first “school of innovation” and help it become a reality as early as the 2015-2016 school year, officials said Tuesday.

“I would like to see classrooms get dumped in general,” says Fred Durham, co-founder of Café Press in Louisville.
