Kentucky Legislators May Let School Districts Shorten Their Calendars Because of All Those Snow Days

FRANKFORT—The state House will vote on legislation to allow Kentucky school districts to shorten their instructional calendar by as many as 10 days.

The measure is being promoted as a way for schools to deal with a greater-than-normal number of snow days. State Rep. Brian Linder, a Dry Ridge Republican, says educators in his district realize it often takes a while for bills to become laws.

“I told them I would bring the urgency that we need to make sure that we get this pushed through as quickly as possible so they can get their schedule figured out,” Linder said.

Jefferson County Public Schools, Others Closed Monday Because of Winter Weather Again

Several Louisville-area school systems, including Jefferson County Public Schools, are closed Monday as a winter storm continues to move through the region.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the winter storm that began Sunday will leave four to seven inches of snow in Louisville and surround areas before it ends late Monday morning.

Winter Weather Chills Donations to Goodwill Stores in Kentucky

A donation deficit at Goodwill stores across Kentucky is putting pressure on the organization’s budget.

Business traditionally slows down during winter months, but this year has been unusually affected by the cold weather, said Heather Hise, spokesperson for Goodwill Industries in Kentucky.

“Compared to last year, we are down 10,000 donations,” Hise said.

The decreased numbers of donations has led to more than just a smaller selection on shelves—it has also affected  employees.

Strong Winds Likely in Louisville With Thursday Night Storm

Just a quick head's up about the weather in Louisville on Thursday evening.

It's been warm in Louisville through the day (in the low 70s in the afternoon), but the National Weather Service said a "strong" cold front is moving into the area.

With that, Louisville may get severe weather Thursday evening, the weather service said in its 4 p.m. update. The best chance is between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. Here's more on the timing:

Snow (Again) Expected in Louisville Area

Update 4:33 p.m.: Latest

Downtown Louisville is getting a rain/snow mix at the moment, but the National Weather Service is still forecasting two to four inches of snow (with more to the north) and cautioning about the Friday afternoon commute. 

In its latest update, the weather service said the mix will convert to snow in the afternoon through evening as it heads south.
