How Louisvillians Dealt With Extremely Cold Days

Recent frigid temperatures have left area residents shivering through daily commutes and outdoor workers bundled-up to brave the elements.

Tuesday morning, WFPL's Jake Ryan hit the streets to find out how people were dealing with the arctic conditions. He froze, but managed to collect this audio postcard.

Extreme Cold Leads to Water Main Breaks in Louisville

Update 1:40 p.m.: It's Not Quite as Cold

The Wind Chill Warning covering Louisville and the surrounding area expired Tuesday morning.

At 1 p.m., the temperature in Louisville was 11 and the wind chill was -2, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperature is forecast to be 14 degrees on Tuesday. 

The high temperature for Wednesday in Louisville is forecast to be 34 degrees, the weather service said.

The weather service added that Louisville has some possibility for wintry mixes on Thursday and Friday.

Extreme Cold Moves Into Louisville Area; JCPS, Other Schools Closed Tuesday

Update 3:51 p.m.: JCPS Will Stay Closed, Too

Jefferson County Public Schools will remain closed on Tuesday because of the extremely cold weather.

Wind chills are forecast to be in the -19 to -23 degrees range between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday, said Mike Paddock, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Louisville.

Winds are expected to ease up in the mid-morning Tuesday—the high temperature is expected to be about 13 degrees, Paddock said.

Louisville Homeless Shelters Expect Influx as Single-Digit Cold Approaches

Temperatures are forecast to drop into the single digits starting this weekend and three Louisville homeless shelters are preparing for an influx of overnight visitors.

The homeless shelters will activate Operation White Flag, a program that disregards normal rules for admittance and accepts anyone who is without a warm place to stay during extreme temperatures.

Operation White Flag is instituted when winter temperatures drop below 35 degrees.

Here's word from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District that covers Jefferson and other counties:

KYTC road crews mobilized at midnight last night. They have been salting the roadways this morning since the precipitation started. With the snow coming down during rush hour, that delays our trucks from covering all of their routes as quickly as we would like due to the extra traffic on the roads.

Update 6:45 a.m. Monday: No Snow, Sleet in Monday Forecast

On Monday Morning, the National Weather Service forecasts cold (a high temperature of 34 degrees) but no precipitation through the day Monday. The weather service still forecasts a possibility of snow early Tuesday.

Winter Mess Hits Louisville Area; Floyd County Declares Emergency

Update 6:40 p.m.: A Record

So far, 2.3 inches of snow fell in Louisville on Friday, the National Weather Service said. The weather service said the snowfall breaks the previous record for this date—1.9 inches set in 1977.

So It Very Possibly May Snow (and More) in Louisville on Friday

It's probably going to snow Friday.

It's probably going to be a mess.

That's the word from the National Weather Service in Louisville.

They're expecting one to five inches of snow (and sleet and freezing rain), depending on what part of Louisville we're talking about. Here's a graphic the NWS posted Thursday afternoon:

Louisville is under a Winter Storm Warning from 10 p.m. Thursday to 1 p.m. Saturday.
