Noise and Notes: The Mourdock Interview and Recapping the Congressional Challengers

Republican Richard Mourdock is in what was considered a tight race for Indiana’s Senate seat. But a recent poll has him down by 11-points to Democrat Joe Donnelly, and observers say the race is leaning Democratic.

Before that poll was released, Mourdock was focusing on his small government policies and the attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya, while trying to keep distance from his controversial comments about rape pregnancies.

I talked to Mourdock about those remarks, working with the next president and why he thinks the Beghazi attack is being overlooked.

Young Ad Targets Obamacare

In the race for Indiana's Ninth Congressional District race, Republican incumbent Todd Young has released a TV ad attacking President Obama's health care overhaul.

The 30-second spot criticizes the Affordable Care Act as "just one more way that Washington is trying to control" residents lives. It shows a series of doors in doctor's offices slamming in the viewers face to signify a barrier between physicians and their patients with Young opening the door for residents.

Young Agrees to Two Debates Against Yoder

Republican incumbent Todd Young has agreed to participate in two debates in Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District race, but Democratic challenger Shelli Yoder wants more forums.

The debates will be held at Franklin College in Johnson County and O'Bannon Publishing in Harrison County, but the Yoder campaign alleges Young is ignoring the need for additional debates in populated areas.

Last month, Yoder called for 13 debates in each county across the southern Indiana district.

Yoder campaign manager Katie Carlson says Young sought seven debates when he ran against then-Congressman Baron Hill two years ago, and that the negotiations are ongoing.

"We have not reached an agreement on the number of debates. We believe that more debates are necessary to give voters of the Ninth District an opportunity to hear from both of their candidates for Congress and an opportunity to discuss issues that are most important to them," she says.

Yarmuth Endorses Yoder for Congress

Kentucky Congressman John Yarmuth endorsed fellow Democrat Shelli Yoder on Friday in Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District race.

Yoder is facing Republican incumbent Todd Young in the fall campaign and has challenged him to a dozen debates across the district. The two campaigns have squabbled over the schedule of those forums in recent weeks.

Yarmuth says he looks forward to having Yoder as a partner in Congress, adding that she is a practical thinker.

"Shelli shares my commitment to making health care more affordable and insurance companies more accountable, protecting Medicare for this generation of seniors and the next, creating an economy that works for everyone, and standing up for our veterans," Yarmuth said in a news release.

Yoder: Young Stalling On Debate Challenge

In Indiana's Ninth Congressional District race, Democrat Shelli Yoder is calling on Republican incumbent Todd Young to get serious about a series of debates she has proposed.

Last month, Yoder challenged Young to 13 town-hall-style debates, one in each county in the southern Indiana district. In response, the Young campaign called the request a political stunt meant to gain media attention because Yoder's staff delivered a letter requesting the debates only 15 minutes before sending it to the press.

Yoder told WFPL in a recent interview that the two camps met since her initial request, but she now accuses Young's campaign of "stalling" and "wasting time" while voters want to hear the issues.

Yoder Presses Young Over Akin 'Legitimate Rape' Comments

In Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District race, Democratic challenger Shelli Yoder is calling on Republican incumbent Todd Young to denounce Missouri Congressman Todd Akin’s controversial comments.

But the GOP lawmaker has already spoken out against the recent statements in a televised interview earlier this week.

Akin made national headlines for saying that women who are "legitimately raped" rarely get pregnant. Other Republicans have urged him to drop out, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Akin’s Senate campaign "has no future."

Yoder says Hoosiers of all political backgrounds have come up to her on the campaign trail and are disgusted with Akin's remarks.

"I want to know why hasn’t Todd Young come out with a statement on something that’s really deplorable in thought," she says.
