Smoketown's Sheppard Square Gets Fresh Start

Efforts to revitalize the Smoketown neighborhood’s Sheppard Square housing development are nearing completion and residents are beginning to move into new apartments.

The $96.5 million renovation began in 2012 and is the third Hope VI project in Louisville. Hope VI is a federally led effort aimed at eradicating distressed public housing.  Nearly $22 million for the project came from federal funds.

New Sheppard Square Will Incorporate Green Features

Officials will break ground this morning on the new Sheppard Square housing development, and the project will be one of Louisville’s greenest.

The old Sheppard Square housing project was anything but green: it was 70 years old, with old boilers, window air conditioning units and single-pane windows. But the new $167 million development—which includes $22 million in federal funds—will utilize the most sustainable materials available.

Noise and Notes: Shawnell Harrison's Concrete Dust and The Immovable Gun Debate

When asked about his documentary debut, Louisville filmmaker Shawnell Harrison is direct about why he chose to tackle the razing of the historic Sheppard Square housing complex as his first project.

The 35-year-old director wanted residents to purge their feelings about the demolition and life in the projects, and Harrison's style dived into the Smoketown neighborhood where he received a raw and emotional reaction. Several residents offered him their explicit love and disdain for the 70-year-old housing project, including criticism of how the housing authority, Metro Police and media view them.

The last resident was relocated in March and demolition began in June, which leaves Sheppard Square as mostly rubble now. Construction of new homes has recently started near the former housing development that will pave the way for a mixed-income neighborhood.

Sheppard Square Demolition Begins

The Sheppard Square public housing development is coming down.

The city is using a $22 million Hope VI grant to demolish and redevelop the 16-acre site. When work is complete, the area will host a mixed-income neighborhood. This is the third redevelopment of a barracks-style public housing complex in Louisville.

The other redeveloped neighborhoods are Park Duvalle, which replaced Cotter-Lang development, and Liberty Green, which replaced the Clarksdale development.
