Louisville City Soccer Team Names a President

Djorn Buchholz will be Louisville City FC's first team president.

Louisville’s new soccer team, Louisville City FC, has announced hiring its first president.

Djorn Buchholz has 13 years of soccer executive experience, including management and fan engagement positions. He’s worked with soccer clubs in Indiana, Minnesota and Texas, according to a release sent by the soccer clubs PR team.

His latest role is director of fan experience with the 2013 Major League Soccer champions, Sporting Kansas City.

U.S. Team's World Cup Loss Leaves Fans in Louisville Disappointed

The United States men's soccer team tried to prolong its World Cup run Tuesday against Belgium.

With the match underway a continent away, a throng of fans gathered at Louisville Fourth Street Live. They watched every kick, shove and flop on a mega-screen,  cheering  each of goalkeeper Tim Howard's saves and jeering Belgium's two goals.

When the final whistle sealed the U.S.A's fate, fans left Fourth Street disappointed in the loss.

Sights and Sounds: Louisvillians Watch the U.S.-Germany World Cup Match

For soccer fans, it was a huge match-up.

The United States men's national soccer team didn't necessarily need a victory Thursday to advance in the World Cup—but fans really, really wanted a win against the high-profile team from Germany.

More than 200 fans chanted and cheered during the afternoon match as they watched on the megascreen at Fourth Street Live in downtown Louisville.

The U.S. lost, but the team still advances into the round of 16.

Logo For Louisville City Soccer Club To Be Unveiled Sunday


Soccer fans attending the Fourth Street Live viewing party of the United States Men’s National Team's next match in the World Cup on Sunday will be be the first to see the new logo for Louisville's new professional soccer team.

USA will take on Portugal at 6 p.m. on Sunday in Manaus, Brazil. During halftime, Louisville City Football Club staff will unveil the new logo.

What You Need To Know About Louisville's New Professional Soccer Club

Louisville will be home to a pro soccer team.

But before Louisville City FC takes to Slugger Field (its home turf) when the season begins in spring 2015, you may want to know a few things.

About 200 people showed up Wednesday to Slugger Field for the announcement, including Mayor Greg Fischer and the president of the team's league, USL PRO. A group of Louisville residents known as the Louisville Coopers were also scattered throughout the crowd.

Louisville is (Officially) Getting a Pro Soccer Team

Starting next year, Louisville will host a professional soccer club in the Major League Soccer-affiliated United Soccer League PRO division.

Owners of the Louisville City Football Club announced Wednesday that the team will be relocating from Orlando before the 2015 season begins.  USL PRO is a second-tier affiliate of Major League Soccer, comparable to a AA minor league baseball team.

The team is based this season in Orlando, which is getting an MLS franchise next season.

Louisville City Soccer Club Expected to be Officially Announced Today


Professional soccer is coming to Louisville.

That's the announcement expected todday at a 2 p.m. press conference at Slugger Field, where the team's home matches would take place. They'll call the team the Louisville City Football Club.

Investors have been working for several months to move the team from Orlando to Louisville, but concerns arose this t week relating to scheduling.

Scheduling Concerns Lead Soccer Franchise to Ask Louisville to Adjust Its Plans

Scheduling concerns have led to a snag in the plans to bring a professional soccer team to Louisville.

The Louisville Bats' schedule would force the USL Pro soccer team to play as many as a third of its matches on weeknights, which may reduce projected attendance by 50 percent, said Wayne Estopinal a minority owner of the Orlando City SC who is leading efforts to relocate the franchise to Louisville.

Louisville Eyed for Professional Soccer Team, Expects Decision in Next Month

A decision is expected soon about the potential move of a professional soccer team from Orlando to Louisville.

Mayor Greg Fischer said team owners want to make a decision in the next month and he wants to make the move a reality.

“I’m excited about the opportunity for pro soccer in Louisville," Fischer says. "Now it’s a question of defining what do they need, what can the city provide, how can this be a win for all parties involved. Anytime we can expand the sports presence in Louisville it’s a good thing.”
