Kentucky Education Group Says New Teachers Need More Supports

The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence has presented its recommendations to lawmakers on how to improve teacher quality in Kentucky.

Prichard is an education think-tank that worked for over a year on the recommendations, which include finding ways to recruit new teachers to replace aging Baby Boomers and supporting equitable disbursement of new teachers among poor and better performing schools.

Kentucky also needs to do a better job supporting new teachers and those in training, says Prichard Committee Executive Director Stu Silberman.

JCPS, Kentucky Among National Leaders in Adding National Board Certified Teachers

Jefferson County Public Schools added the fourth most National Board-certified teachers last school year out of all districts nationwide.

And Kentucky added the sixth most board certified teachers out of all the states.

The advanced certification is a rigorous performance-based process that can take up to three years to complete. It’s a voluntary credential that compliments degrees and other standards that are required by individual states.

Kentucky Selected For Two-Year Pilot To Improve Teacher Preparation Programs

Kentucky is among seven states that will participate in a two-year pilot program to improve teacher training programs and help the state’s higher education system better align with reforms at the K-12 level.

It’s not just a conversation happening in Kentucky.

Nationwide, educators, policy experts and lawmakers are emphasizing the need to better prepare teachers at the college and university level.
