Renewable Energy Workshop Postponed Until March

A conference on renewable energy that was scheduled for next month has been pushed back to March 2013.

This year’s Kentucky Statewide Workshop on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency—organized by the Conn Center at the U of L—was supposed to be next month. But Conn Center Assistant Director Andrew Marsh says the center just decided that more academic speakers would be available at a different time of year.

U of L Approved for State's Largest TIF District

U of L's Belknap TIF is over 900 acres.

 

Kentucky’s economic development cabinet has granted final approval for a special taxing district near the University of Louisville’s Belknap campus.  

The over 900-acre tax increment financing district is the largest ever approved by the state.   The TIF program will allow U of L to keep a portion of state and local taxes generated within the district.

U of L President James Ramsey says the district will help finance an engineering and applied sciences research park, much like the healthcare facilities developed in the downtown TIF district.

State Representative Included in U of L Layoffs

Kentucky State Rep. Reggie Meeks, D-Louisville, has been laid off from his job as director of outreach at the University of Louisville due to budget cuts.

Meeks revealed his job status during an interview with Ryan Alessi of CN/2, in which he criticized rising tuition at the state's public universities. 

WFPL previously reported that U of L expected up to 20 employee layoffs in various departments, which was subject to decisions made by deans or department leaders.

U of L Begins Road to New Research Park

 

University of Louisville officials are continuing plans to develop a research park near the Belknap Campus.

In a ceremonial groundbreaking Monday, the project--located just North of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium--was unveiled and includes a new road and two bridges that will connect the research facilities with the rest of campus.

U of L Approved For Fellowship In Child Abuse Pediatrics

The University of Louisville Department of Pediatrics has been granted permission by a national accreditation council to offer a fellowship to doctors in child abuse pediatrics.

The three-year program is one of 25 in the country dealing with physical and sexual child abuse, neglect, prevention and advocacy.

Fellowship director Dr. Lisa Pfitzer says it will function much like a physician’s residency, with emphasis on clinical work.

UofL Offering Car-Sharing Program in Fall

Registered participants will have access to Toyota Corollas.

 

The University of Louisville has partnered with Enterprise to provide a car-sharing program that will offer faulty and students a low-cost transportation option next school year. 

The company’s We-Car program will allow participants to pick up a Toyota Corolla for an hour, a day or a weekend, said John Drees, spokesman for the University of Louisville.

“Members will have access to these cars at any time. You sign up for time slots, but it’s a 24/7 365 day a year operation," he said.
