IRS: U of L Official Defrauded School, Medical Practices; Losses May Exceed $2 Million

The Internal Revenue Service says the executive director of a medical department at the University of Louisville wrote checks to himself possibly in excess of $2 million since 2007. 

Perry "Chad" Vaughn, who oversaw the school's Department of Family & Geriatric Medicine, is due in federal court on Monday after federal prosecutors obtained a preliminary injunction to prevent him from spending any of the funds.

The IRS says the money came from the department and affiliated medical practices.

U of L Hospital to Pay $2.8 Million to Settle Medicare Billing Case

University of Louisville Hospital has reached a $2.8 million settlement with the federal government to end allegations that it submitted false Medicare billing claims.

The agreement, announced today, covers a five-year period that began January 1, 2006.

Kentucky Inmate Charged With Threatening President, First Family

A Kentucky inmate has been charged with threatening the life of President Barack Obama, the first lady and their two daughters.

A grand jury in Louisville today charged Kentucky State Penitentiary inmate Anthony D. Holliman with threatening the president and a second count of threatening the president's family.

The indictment says Holliman, who’s serving decades in prison for rape and other convictions, wrote a threatening letter addressed to Obama in May.  It says Holliman used racial epithets in the letter.

USA Harvest Founder Stan Curtis Facing Federal Felony Charges

The founder of Louisville-based USA Harvest is charged in federal court with mail fraud, money laundering and filing false income tax returns.

Stan Curtis is accused of stealing more than $183,000 in donations he solicited for the charity, which collects and distributes food for the needy. He’s also charged with failing to report the money as income with the IRS, along with more than $370,000 in travel expenses he allegedly charged to USA Harvest.
