Louisville Metro Police's VIPER Unit Commander and a Detective Are Under Investigation

The commander and a detective in a Louisville Metro Police unit focused on violent, repeat offenders are under investigation, police confirmed Thursday.

Lt. Johann "Kit" Steimle and Detective Carl Payne have been reassigned to administrative duties, said Alicia Smiley, a police spokeswoman.

Louisville Metro Police: VIPER Unit Has Helped Reduce Violent Crime in First Year


  Louisville Metro Police's VIPER Unit has helped reduce violent crime in nine out of 10 areas they've targeted, and they've also helped with the confiscation of 270 illegal guns—half of which were in the hands of convicted felons, officials said.

Police officials updated the Louisville Metro Council's Public Safety Committee on Tuesday as the VIPER UNIT approaches the one-year-anniversary of its creation.

LMPD to Target Violent Crime With New VIPER Unit

Violent crime statistics are on an uptick in Louisville in 2012, and Police Chief Steve Conrad recently announced the formation of a new unit to specifically tackle this growing problem.  The VIPER unit will go after the worst offenders in the city and focus resources on known hot spots.
